50.8% of the US population is female; so (controlling for my mate) if I talk to anyone I've a slightly better than 50:50 chance that they will be female.
As for on-line dating; no. I might not be corresponding with anyone at the time, or if I'm browsing profiles, I might not see anyone who interests me or who I might be compatible with. If I am corresponding with someone who I'm interested in, it would behoove me not to give them the impression that I've lost interest.
