GOP lawmakers groan as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez votes for Nancy Pelosi to be speaker

Quote:
GOP lawmakers groaned when liberal darling Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., voted for Nancy Pelosi to become the next House speaker on Thursday.

Ocasio-Cortez, the youngest woman elected to Congress, publicly endorsed Pelosi's speakership bid in November. But her voice vote Thursday, which helped Pelosi secure the 213 votes she needed to retake the gavel, provoked a response from House Republicans that her congressional colleagues did not receive.

Some reporters in the chamber described the reaction as "boos," while others said they were "groans."

Michael Barbaro, of the New York Times, tweeted that the rumbling from the GOP side did not appear to be malicious.

"Republicans gently and playfully boo as AOC votes for Pelosi," he wrote.

AOC could come out as pro-life and the GOP still would not want anything to do with her. I see her proposals to the United States' ills as fairly logical. A "green deal"? 70% tax on the wealthiest Americans? I don't see anything wrong with it. The average American doesn't know how untaxed they are. Certain states lack income and/or sales taxes. Most countries (if I recall correctly) have a local and a federal sales tax.

But then again, the problem with American politics is that the "big-tent" mentality means that both parties need to cater to the extremes. In Canada, I would most likely be a member of the NDP.

Is this the woman that the right have lost their sh*t over because she once danced to music as a teenager?

I think they lost their sh*t over her because of her (perceived) hard-left stance on the economy.

They have ganged up on her for a number of reasons.

Leftest Yep, Women Yep, Minority Yep but that describes many of the newly elected members but she is the one they vocally reacted to and have been criticizing non stop since she was nominated.

One reason is she has made a number of unforced errors showing lack of knowledge on important issues giving them openings. As a young freshmen member from urban distract lack of knowledge of a wide variety of issues is to be expected. That situation is likely to be corrected and they know it because she is a very smart person. She won second prize in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair with a microbiology research project leading to an asteroid being named after her. She graduated college cum laude. She has a charismatic personality. If you are a conservative or just do not like democratic socilism she is your nightmare. If you also don’t like minorities also she is your worst nightmare and if you are also misogynist also she is beyond the worst nightmare you can imagine.

Aren't the "progressives" outraged? She's supporting the establishment now.

Graduated with honors and a prize-winning scientist? An egalitarian and a feminist? An asteroid's namesake?

When can I vote for her presidency?

I don't think we're at Ocasio-Cortez derangement syndrome yet, but she's the closest thing they have to it. She's got under a lot of people's skin and while I can certainly sympathise with the reasons why, it's OTT and counterproductive just like it is with the dems and Trump. And unlike with Trump, since he's already at the very top so it doesn't matter, you're puffing up her perceived importance / threat level by treating her this way and helping her get support behind her. It reminds me of Anita Snakeesian. She should never have got where she got, and after people stopped freaking out about her she went back to irrelevance where she belongs.

I was not aware of her intelligence though, I took her to be a bit of an airhead not worth wasting energy on. Though did and do know she ran an intelligent campaign to get where she is. That still doesn't erase the airhead impression she's giving off though. She's not here to perform microbiology. If she keeps being an airhead, she's not worth concerning yourself with if she's not directly in your path.

She has intelligence, but lacks experience. Give her time.

Meanwhile, she makes the perfect victim for the bullies of the New Reich -- a young minority woman who does not yet know whom to trust.

But she's learning.

Gee, I wonder why you assumed she was an airhead.

That would be 2024. She was born October 13, 1989 which would make her 35 years old on January 20, 2025 just old enough to be eligible for the office.

In my humble opinion, the right is demonizing this young woman because she's the new Barack Obama. She's a person of color, above average intelligence, and filled with passion for her brand of politics. Demonizing her says more about the right.

I'm not sure how I feel about her. I haven't paid a great deal of attention to her, I've not sought her out, but since she is attracting so much interest from others, I can't help but see some of her. I find the reactions she generates more interesting than the woman herself.

I haven't seen anything to make me think she is malicious. Though she does sometimes have the look of a zealot with her creepy faces. As I said, she seems airheaded, an idealist with a very poor grip on reality. So it might be a good thing if she smartens up as Fnord predicts. But it depends on who is doing the teaching and if she even thinks she has anything to learn. She could end up as some rabid "feminist" / SJW / communist instead.

The "smartening up" will be learning to become a corporate sellout while pretending to give a hoot about the citizenry.

It'll happen, just give it time :P
