Internet data mining vs. voice data mining
This question is rhetorical: Why is it OK for internet companies like search engines, social media sites, etc to mine data from user's communications, internet search preferences, etc but not for cell phone or "land line" phone companies to listen in on calls, identify words, phrases and information they can sell to third parties for profit?
I realize the actual answers involve current laws and that internet companies have long disclosures you must accept to use their services and in which you're waiving a certain amount of your right to privacy and that there are laws against a phone company mining conversations for profit motives.
Why are people seemingly OK with having their internet data mined and sold but would most likely be very much opposed to phone companies doing to the same thing with conversations? Why do laws allow the former but not the latter?
