I've never built a PC, and if I ever do it'll probably just be as a challenge or out of curiosity. The most I've ever done is to add a second hdd to a laptop, fit an m-sata ssd, or add extra RAM.

I am genuinely curious though about why the OP has equipped his machine with 8 Terabytes of storage. That does seem like a heck of a lot, assuming it's used as a home computer - I've never used up more than about 200 GB of the capacity of a 1Tb drive, despite downloading quite a few films, games etc over the years.

Backups,loads of movies, TV shows, games, music and VR porn(its in 4k so the file sizes are huge). The 3TB drive is sorta dying so I bought a 4TB to replace it. The 1TB is just a seperate drive for backups of important files. The two SSDs are for windows, demanding games and frequently used programs.

I didn't build my current gaming rig, i'm too old to mess about and just bought one outright. It's built by the games store so in a sense - it's a build...

Anyway, the specs are:
* Core i5-8500
* 16 gig ram
* GTX-1070
* 1 TB harddrive.

...and a sticker on the outside that says: "VR Ready" :)

In this i also include 2 camera mounts that i got the Vive Beacons on so they get up higher.

Also got an external 2 TB HD where i keep my movies, shows and backed up steam games (8 TB would be nice, but i can manage on 2).

My laptop is a bit slower, but i can still run Fallout 4 on it. Use that mostly to watch movies and browse the web. Had a core i7 laptop with dual graphics cards in it once - that was da bomb, it died maybe 2-3 years ago though, but oh man, what a portable gamesmachine it was!

It's been many moons since I built a desktop. My last one was an all-in-one 24" touchscreen MCI. That was, maybe, six years ago. These are the specs to my current HP laptop which I mainly use for sequencing music and the occasional Fallout 4:

AMD quad core Ryzen 5 @ 3.6Ghz
AMD Radeon 8 graphics 1GB
DDR4 Ram 16GB
SSD 512GB
BT 4.2
Backlit keyboard
17.3" touchscreen

Not exactly a powerhouse but gets the job done. I watch TV on a 55" Roku and a T95Q Android Box (which also doubles as a gaming box since I have a Hycarus controller).

I built a PC back in 2010 which has lasted me well but it turns out that Windows 10 has issues with the processor and mobo in it so its back to the drawing board.

This time I have gone with:
Intel I7-9700k Proc
ASUS Prime Z390-A Mobo
Noctua NH-D15 Cooler
Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB RAM
CORSAIR RM750x Power Supply
Western Digital Caviar 500GB HrdDrv (os)
WD Blue 2TB (data)
ASUS MX259H 25-Inch Monitor

I'm interested in VR so if anyone has any recommendations for a graphics card/headset combo please send them my way. Thanks much.

Last PC I built was an AMD K8 with an Asus motherboard using a nVidia chipset. That machine finally convinced me to give up building my own machines and go back to Apple (which I started with while I was in grad school, back in the mid 1980’s, with an Apple ][plus.).

My current machine is a 4th generation “cheesegrater” (AKA a 2009 Mac Pro, running an Intel Xeon quad core “Nehalem” CPU) that I upgraded with a 2 TB HDD, 2 1TB HDDs, 32gb memory, and able to quadruple boot, using rEFInd, MacOS Mojave, Mac OS X Snow Leopard, Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, and Linux Mint 19.1 64-bit. I have snow leopard installed only because it’s the last version of Mac OS X that supports Rosetta, and I have all the old Freeverse Burning Monkey Game series that I had in a file cabinet in the garage.

Further, hardware and firmware: I flashed the firmware to make this machine act like a 5th generation Mac Pro (done automatically when MacOS Mojave was installed), a Frisco Logic USB 3.0 PCIe card (from Sonnet Tech) and a TP-Link Archer USB 3.0 WiFi stick (since the Airport card that came standard was missing on this box when I bought it off eBay). Next upgrade will be an ATI 7550 video card(which Apple says might be supported by their Metal graphics engine) to replace the 2 512mb nVidia GT120 graphics cards that came with this machine (I DESPISE nVidia, ever since they bought up 3DFX and replaced that chipset with their own inferior product. :evil: ), and a PCIe adapter card from Other World Computing to add a 2.5 in. SSD (when I’ll probably purchase a 1TB SSD when I get my next SSDI check.) My final upgrade will likely be a processor tray upgrade to a dual CPU setup and 2 hex-core Westmere Xeons and another 32gb of memory, (if I ever get the nearly $700.00 to afford that tray and another $500.00 for the hex core CPUs/heat sinks and another 32 gb memory.)

Before anyone accuses me of being a Mac p!ssy, I have yet to have Windows 7 crash on my since going to an intel-based Mac (which happened all the time with all previous versions of Windows that installed on all the machines I built. In addition, I worked as a contractor-employee doing front line support for Apple out of Bawlmer (Baltimore) county from 2002-2004. That call center was the only call center where the contractor hired everyone with Windows experience. Given half the chance (and the fact that HP hasn’t been exactly forthcoming in releasing the source code for it since they made it open source), I’d be also running VMS on this box. (Yeah, I’m an OS-slut. So sue me! :twisted: )

An ASUS ROG Dominus extreme build to the max would be nice but right now my only serious machine is the little one: Dell XPS 9350 with whatever i7, a WD 1tb NVMe running Fedora 29.

Work machines are pretty cheap in my department, the fastest workstations we have are laptops. I won't bore you with those lest someone actually take my post as advice.
