Guys I have this friend looking to go into full-time employment to secure a living at a one bedroom, third floor apartment north of where he lives. It is unknown exactly how long he has til he moves in but he has a seasonal job. He works as a busser/host/food runner at a riverside restaurant next to a military and naval park. He only earns money from his SSi and parents during the non-spring/summer/fall months and he feels bummed he can’t find a good paying job. He went to college for about a year or less, dropped out, and can’t find a teaching job or something that pays good without a degree. Any suggestions out there for him as to what pays full time employment wise? He always complains when people don’t call him back within a two day expectation that he gives them and he gets chosen over b/c of a lack of experience. He mainly wants to work in sales but has worked as a busser at an ice cream shop, was an inventory specialist at Walmart, and even worked as a dietary aide at an elderly residence. So not only is he good in retail and food but there has to be something else. I just don’t know what to tell him. I tell him to wait until the big hiring months of March/April and September/October but he keeps this tradition going no matter what. I went through two months of one first interview and three second interviews to get my current full-time job and I’m just praying that he’ll get one so that he can be happy. I’m just trying to get him to understand that the full-time employment hiring process is not like part time employment hiring processes go with just one full interview. He’s got time you know.

No college degree ... seasonal worker ... food service ... warehouse worker ... disability ...

I'm afraid that I cannot offer much hope for gainful full-time employment with those qualifications.

Has he tried an apprenticeship program in the skilled trades?

Could he pass a military test and physical exam?

Could he work in construction or the Merchant Marines?

He could try applying for something like civil service exams and usajobs.gov like I did before. They got good jobs for veterans and civilians with disabilities alike. I have not thought of an apprenticeship in the skilled trades but I might need a link for suggestion. Other than a military test and physical exam I am not sure what the ramifications/qualifications are. My employment specialist who suggested that is long gone. (I don’t work together with her anymore, long story). Other than construction I could try to get him to help voluntarily with general contractors in my state.

Civil service is probably his best bet.

Probably. Even if he didn’t get into the military grade serving he would still have a shot at a better life. (I can relate) He’s one of my best friends you know.

If he really wants to do sales there is often a commission based job available. Tough, but if you can sell, that is all they really care about.

Yes BTDT, but I’m not sure what experience he has in sales. He said he did have some but forgot what it was.
