A short series of simple, practical scientific experiments should solve this pretty quickly.
The shopping centre near me has plenty of escalators, and we'll need ...

Are there any volunteers out there who'd like to help us with our ground-breaking physics research?!

Sure. Okay gravity, I am calling you out mano a mano, a challenge to the death.

An old man fell down the escalator one time I was at the Greyhound bus station in New York City. He tried to go on with his walker. They have an elevator but it's kinda hidden so maybe he didn't know about it. He needed medical attention & was likely brought to the hospital.

It would break social rules too. Where I come from people will laugh or be freaked out if you're seen doing anything on an escalator other than going up the right escalator and going down the right escalator. You might have an excuse if you're a kid but your parents will stop you, or, failing that, a member of staff.

I recommend this be tested with an inanimate object like a ball. Dropping a ball down an up escalator and see if it continues to fall indefinitely.

Seem like that would depend entirely if the speed of the escalator matches that of the effects of gravity and friction. Otherwise, it would eventually reach the bottom. A ball wouldn't simulate a human in this situation, you would need a human like doll with accurate weight, size and texture. One might assume a conscious human could also stop themselves from tumbling eventually.

The ground which is at the transition point from flat ground to escalator will stop the fall, if it isn't stopped before then.
