Seem like that would depend entirely if the speed of the escalator matches that of the effects of gravity and friction. Otherwise, it would eventually reach the bottom. A ball wouldn't simulate a human in this situation, you would need a human like doll with accurate weight, size and texture. One might assume a conscious human could also stop themselves from tumbling eventually.
