2+2x4

I suck terribly at maths but when I worked this out I got 16. But apparently most people say it's 10. It's on a Facebook meme thing. People are saying that only idiots think it's 16.

I worked it out as 2+2=4, times 4 by 4 and you get 16.

Do you guys make 10 or 16?

You are supposed to do the multiplication first, then the addition. This is how most people get 10. Parenthesis can be used to change the order of operation.

10 = 2 + (2 x 4)

Order of Precedence dictates that higher-order math functions (division, multiplication) are performed before lower-ordered ones (addition, subtraction).

And no, this is not a "Facebook meme thing"; this is standard mathematical practice.

No I meant it was on a meme thing on Facebook, and I just looked through the comments and very few people came up with 16 as an answer.

I do feel dumb when it comes to maths.

But now you know.

Try a few more:

3 + 7 x 3

(5 x 2) - 1 + 3 x 3

22 + 2 - 8 x 2

Just Google "order of operations." And you will get the right answer to those problems.

I tried working out the first one, and came up with 24.

The answer is 30. 7 + 3 = 10; then you multiple 10 by 3 to get 30. Order of Operations.

Don't feel bad, Joe. I'm no math genius, either.

Actually Joe, you're right.

BEDMAS means you do the x part first (7x3 =21) and then back up to add 3.

Way to go, Joe!

I guess I'm wrong---Order of Operations again.

It's 3 + (7 x 3), which would equal 24.

3 + 21 = 24.

I'm embarassed LOL

And I spelled embarrassed incorrectly, too!

Joe....don't worry about it. It's not the end of the world.

You can dance to Humps as your penance, but you need to answer the other two problems as well.
