Frankly, I think almost everyone here is suspecting that he may be a scam, but they don't want to hurt your feelings Kitty.

I would say, play along and see where it goes, but never give money, or Credit card info or any of this sort.

I messaged my brother about a month in So Cal. He goes once a year.

Reply:

"If you stay in hotels, and have an average car and food at average restaurants, one day is about $500 USD. That's a normal car, average restaurants, and general but clean accommodation with nothing fancy. Maybe a hundred less ($400 USD) if you have a very basic and potentially nasty motel".

500 x 30 = $15 000
400 x 30 = $12 000

This is all on top of the flights and health insurance.

Map84 - I don't think he's "very wealthy". Kitty said he's having trouble affording his plane fare to get home, and that they're trying to figure out how he can afford his stay.

I’ve known people from the U.K. to do exactly that, believe it or not.

They have the erroneous notion that the US is paved with gold.

He already has a choice of 28 countries to live and work in, he'd have to be a cherry short of a Belgian Bun to think

the US is an easier country to be poor in.

I concur! I've never heard of anyone from Britain becoming an illegal alien, plenty move there but afaik not under dubious circumstances, though of course there's always some silly devils!
Actually I wonder how his British status is, if he's French, living in the U.K., shouldn't he be more stressed about Brexit than sight seeing on the other side of the pond right now!?

Actually you can travel on the cheap by getting a monthly or weekly rate at a motel that has kitchenette rooms or at least a minifridge and microwave. Then you store some food in the fridge, and save the cost of restaurant meals. And many of these places have a free breakfast.

I'm betting you could do a month like this for about $3500, not including the airfare. Still not cheap, but lower than another estimate.

I never said this. He don’t have money now, he spend it for work, he’s a mechanical engineer, he will have money after he finished his job. Maybe two weeks here would be better. I live in S California, near Los Angeles.

He should work to get more money, it’s expensive staying in a hotel & he need money to get home to UK.

I'm sorry if I misunderstood this statement. You also said he will cut the trip shorter so it will be less expensive.

My wife's nephew is a mechanical engineer.

He never has to "spend money" for his work.

I took this to mean traveling to different jobs. Maybe he's self employed.

French and UK citizens have the right to live and work anywhere within the European Union (28 countries). The UK is about to leave the European Union though so things are going to get harder. This is called Brexit.

I agree to this opinion.
At best it looks like very poor planning.
At worst... well, simply a scam :(

I'm more worried about your safety than your pocketbook. You haven't met this person's family and friends. You don't know what sort of background he comes from. I'm willing to bet you haven't done a background check on him, for criminal record or anything.

He's probably a good guy, all right. I just want you to be safe, not sorry.
