This is probably one of the reasons why he was (actually) not "over the moon" when he won the 2016 election. He has been determined to keep his financial history off the record as well, including his various bankruptcies, the failure of Trump university and other shonky business ventures gone wrong.

His tactic of attacking the free press and calling anyone (including congress) who questions him a liar seems to have worked so far. But for how long?

By appearing to try and hide this it just makes people speculate the worst.

Just release them and get on with things

He did not merely 'appear' to hide this, hiding his tax records is exactly what is happening.

Which works greatly in his favour if his tax records are clean but he's trying to hide something else.
