Very sad story. The slain hiker suffered from depression and PTSD, and hiking alleviated his symptoms. I know hiking has helped me deal with depression for years. It's a sick world we live in.

Sad.

On many levels.

That he survived war overseas, only to die while hiking. And that hiking had been curing him of PTSD.

That the AT now has to be policed better.

I'm not sure how you can police a hiking trail. Perhaps the worst part of this story is that the killer had already exhibited violent behavior to other hikers, but the police said they couldn't do anything because they didn't have enough evidence to hold him. The legal system could use some tweaks for sure.

It's a dangerous world full of dangerous people. There certainly has been a very small number of people killed while hiking the AT; probably no more than are killed by bears. I have plans to attempt a thru-hike in the near future and I certainly wouldn't be deterred by a horrible tragedy like this.

He is a well-known weirdo.

He's known to call himself, "Sovereign" and "Machete".

He has a long history of belligerence towards hikers.

He has a history of arrests for this type of behavior.

Some speculate he has paranoid schizophrenia.

Sounds like this guy should have been locked up a long time ago. Damn!
