That is true. Just about every religion believes in some form of an apocalypse. I think hunans have known since the beginning that our world wasn't going to last forever.

They just got it wrong by about 5 billion years. :mrgreen:

If nothing else then the sun will swallow us up millions of years from now. ;)

According to one of the latest theories, it will be a billion years from now.

This is the way the world ends... not with a bang but a whimper

That should be plenty of time for us to find a new abode.

Let us hope we don't fall back into the dark ages then. :)

My favorite poem about the end of the world

Quote:
There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground,
And swallows circling with their shimmering sound;

And frogs in the pools singing at night,
And wild plum trees in tremulous white,

Robins will wear their feathery fire
Whistling their whims on a low fence-wire;

And not one will know of the war, not one
Will care at last when it is done.

Not one would mind, neither bird nor tree
If mankind perished utterly;

And Spring herself, when she woke at dawn,
Would scarcely know that we were gone.

The world just might end with a long whimper, indeed...

But it won't be in our generation, or for a long time afterwards.

There has never been any kind of guarantee/certitude that the human race will "probably last forever".

According to paleontologists the average species lasts "about a million years" before going extinct.

If you define the human species as "anatomically modern humans" (don't count archaic humans like Neanderthals, Homo Erectus, or Denisovians as being of our own species_ then we have been around for about 200 thousand years. So we have a lot of time left.

But we might mess up and cause our own extinction much sooner than that. Only time will tell.

The same genus "Homo", but not the same species "Sapiens".
