What this article is telling me is that 8chan and the like will be a good excuse to allow homeland security to put stringent government controls on the internet. One of which would be removing all forms of anonymity.

Even it's founder Frank Brennan is embarrassed by 8chan

The website is toxic source of propaganda for radical violent incels

I wonder if the shooter was on facebook or twitter. Maybe those should be shut down, too.

You can't tell the that it's not hypocritical to shut down 8chan because of this shooting, but last I checked ISIS still has a facebook page and twitter is filled with calls for political violence.

Besides, this is an entirely hollow gesture, and will achieve nothing of meaning. 4chan formed following a schism on 2chan, 8chan formed after the exodus from 4chan following Gamergate. The only question is which board the actually dangerous people will congreate on next, and how much of regular internet culture will be smeared in the process of playing this pointless game of whack-a-mole.

Twitter and facebook have been asked by security agencies to be vigilant in removing offensive content, so long as they keep to their word then alls well.

8Chan is a magnet for violent misogynistic types

All is not well, as that lets FB and Tw arbitrate what constitutes "offensive".

...and next week "violent misogynistic types" will have a new corner of the internet to congregate in. What will have been achieved, besides making the people on 8chan who aren't "violent misogynistic types" feel scapegoated and potentially push some of them towards actually becoming radicals? Do you think that improve the situation?

They may find a home in the dark web...where they belong

So, in essence, you don't particularly care about making the situation better or worse, so long as someone you see as sufficiently "other" can be blamed and punished?

Great idea, send them to the dark web where we can't keep an eye on what they're doing.

It was too late this time, but in future a place like 8 Chan might allow us to see and stop someone in their tracks before they commit atrocities.
