The problem will be economic pressure -- the strain on the Chinese economy is getting significant. But it's hard to see how the CCP could lose control of the mainland. I haven't followed this in great detail -- have the HK protests spread to the mainland?

This is the fear.
And there seems to be a global hardening of position/attitude against the CCP thuggery.
The problem of "appeasement" is at the forefront of many people's minds.

Bannon suggests global opinion is why the CCP has backed off on their intimidation against Hong Kong.
A significant development since "saving face" is extremely important in the Chinese cultural mind-set.

I haven't really followed Bannon since he got ejected way back in the early period, but it was obvious he was pretty smart because he was one of the first ones the media decided had to be destroyed at all costs.
