What does it mean?

I've never heard of that idiom, either.

You aren't as smart as a Labrador dog, or you are as smart as a Labrador. In common parlance, Labradors are considered big, friendly and dumb as rocks.

Well the usual response to the Labrador reference was a mention of how much I eat (anything, within reason) and apparently I was cute and had a nice smile. Notice that I use past tense; the horse term took over from the Labrador several years ago

When I was a kid my mother would tell me to "pull my socks up" when they wanted me to work harder to get better grades at school.

I don't know where they got that phrase, but it sure would be great if all I needed to get better grades was to pull up my socks. And then maybe I'd use some tape to keep them up.
