Really? I've encountered atheists who have spiritual beliefs. Atheism isn't defined by an utter lack of spiritual beliefs, it's defined by not believing in gods. Not all atheists are also materialists, even though all materialists are also atheists.

You would be surprised. A remarkable number of religious people are also hardcore materialists.

No they aren't. Materialism implies a strict rejection of the supernatural.

Unless you're using it in the other, unrelated meaning.

Atheists can believe in spirits, so long as they don't deify said spirits.

Never met a Westerner, even a New Ager, like that.

There are what are called "atheistic" sects of Hinduism. Hinduism comes in monotheistic, polytheistic, and even atheistic, flavors. Buddhism is sometimes classified as an atheistic form of Hinduism. In Buddhism gods either don't exist at all, or they exist but they are irrelevant to salvation. Its the force of Karma (moral punishment and reward) that drives things.

But Hindu type "atheism" is not considered to be the same thing as modern Western "atheism", and the two are not supposed to be conflated.

If someone doesn't believe in the divine, they're an atheist. You speak of it like it's some sort of codified religion and not merely a descriptive word.

An atheist who doesn't believe in stuff would be an idealist atheist. Haven't met any of those yet but I'm sure it would be fascinating.

The F are you talking about?

A "person who doesn't believe in stuff" is usually thought of as being the opposite of an idealist. They are usually thought of as being a "cynic".

Well...you haven't returned to the thread you started miss Kitty 4670.

But I hope you got the answer to your question.

To reiterate:

Atheism is only used if what the person disbelieves in is ...the existence of god (or of gods).

Not with disbelief in other things.

It's True; Everyone Believes in 'God' As Really Everyone's Belief in 'Something' is 'God'.

Some Folks Dance with the Devil in the Pale Moon Light...

Ask An 'Amazing Joker' He Will Show You All About it...

Other Folks See God As the Breeze And Paint With All the Colors of the Wind...

At Least that's How Vanessa Williams and Beyonce Describe the Spirit of the Wind (God)...

In other Words, 'God' is only As Much 'God' as We Dance with the Devil in the Pale Moon Light
or Paint the Breeze With All the Colors of the Wind; And This Is Also Why You Rarely See An Artist
Describing Their Way of Life Eternally Now in Flow As 'Atheist' Versus 'God' Coloring Wind as Breeze of Living Breath...

No Doubt That Folks Without Much Visual thinking Ability, Which Makes Imagination Even Possible Now, See a Very
Colorful and Eternal Wind; the Breath of the Breeze some of Us See Eternally more now in the Present of the Moment
ever expanding Colorful More; in other Words, the Essence of Divine only Possible to Relate as Metaphor for those
Who Never Meet the Feeling and the Sense of the Divine in Flow of ever Expanding Colors of the Wind Still Come to be...

Everyone Believes in Something...
Something is Never Nothing Is God...
At Least Not in the Human Experience, Technically SpeaKinG;
In other Words, 'This' 'God Thingie' is like A Window that some folks only Opaque See And Be.

i Wonder how i can possibly Fix That?

Science Suggests it may or may not
be Possible to Attain 'This' for 'the others'...

So, i at least, cry i try; Dance And Sing it too..
It's Light Returning to Bones of Life Feeling up with
Flesh and Blood again; the Bread; the Life; as 'they' say too
but have
Forgotten
How to Really Dance And Sing IT too...
Painting With All the Colors of the Wind
More As Breeze so Easy.... to Love it all DarK Thru Light...

Is a 'Cold Play Concert' Any Different than a Southern Baptist Gospel
Singing Where the Group Becomes One Supraorganism of Moving Connecting Co-Creating Human
Being Empathy of Spirit Wind Ascending Transcending 'Normal' Human Consciousness in Flow;
Hell NO; a 'Cold Play Concert' in terms of "For where two or three are Gathered Together
in this Presence of Wind (Spirit/God) With No Name there am 'i' in the Midst of them as WE"
is Much More than 7 Thousand Multiples of 7 Greater;
Imagine A World Where 7 Billion Human
Beings Dance And Sing together;
Imagine What that World
of 'God' Holding
Hands together Will Do.
SMiLes; that is What the Internet is for;
small steps more to Grow; but first Just Do It.

Hmmm....

Cant tell whether youre being sincere or sarcastic.
Your response is too weird to be sincere.
But it makes even less sense as sarcasm than it does as sincerity. So...I guess that you must be being sincere. :lol:

So..thanks...I guess. :lol:

This thread looks like it was started by someone drunk to help settle an argument with another drunk and five minutes after it was started, both fell asleep. Kitty4670 is probably still hungover.

Kitty has multiple issues, which is nothing unique on WP. I don’t have exactly the highest opinion of some things she’s done, but it’s really not my place to judge. I tend to take her at face value and try to be helpful if I can.

Atheism is when you simply are not into any kind of religion or faith, hense not believing in them.

Why do you ask?

I think she was trying to figure out how broadly or narrowly to use the term. For example would it be the right term to ask if I don't have faith in Republicans or Democrats, does that mean I am an atheist?

That is not exactly what it means.

The "the" is "Atheism" is from the Greek "theo" meaning "god".

The "A" at the beginning means "not".

The word means "not believing in the existence of god/gods".

Not believing in a god or gods would indeed make you a nonbeliever in most religions though. Though you could be a Buddhist and be an atheist at the same time.
