I like older movies better than newer movies

Does anybody else feel this way? Frankly i think today's movies are too much flash and not enough substance. Nothing but CGI effects and hollow acting.

Watch Ophelia, which is the Hamlet story told through the eyes of the woman who loved him. It's a modern movie without any of the things you dislike. Or watch one of my favorite movie genres: bios about writers or artists. Those that stand out are:
Kill Your Darlings.
Beat.
Frida.
Pollock.
The Whole Wide World.

One newer movie I did like because it kind of reminded me of the older movies was "In The Heart of the Sea". Of course it didnt get good reviews (figures...), but it was such a sad movie about men struggling to survive after bring shipewrecked and being forced to do horrific things for survival (like cannibalism).

This was actually a true story that the book Moby Dick was based off of.

And by "older" movies I dont necessarily mean black and white (though i like some of those too). I even consider movies from the 90's and early 2000's pretty old now. It feels like so many movies started to suck after that...

What can be interesting is going back to look at critic reviews of movies now considered classics, and seeing that the critics complained about elements as if they were important problems, but meant nothing for how good they be considered. Or looking at movies that won awards in the past and to be considered something important, that ended up barely anyone was into them later.

It is fine if you like some older movies better, as long as you maybe have awareness that you are not just being nostalgic, or some sort of bias where it could be easier to pick out good movies, or ones you like, from the past, but more difficult for any particular movie as it comes out to be the sort of movie you want. As a whole I don't think one can say movies have necessarily gotten worse, especially if you can follow some channels that follow the more niche stuff.

I agree, many cult classics seemed to have gotten negative or mediocre reviews when they first came out but fans enjoyed them anyways.

And then there's movies that were very popular and praised at the time but seemed to lose that popularity over the years.

watch "loving vincent." or "waking life." both literal art movies.

Many of the old movies in the "Golden Age" of Hollywood are just amazing as was the acting.

the dawn of moviemaking was literally something some very intelligent and far-sighted people stumbled upon and invented as they went along.

Metropolis by Fritz Lang will always be a classic.

forbidden planet was better than it had any right to be. if it weren't for the hays code, it would have been still better yet. as it was, one had to be a sharp reader between the lines to uncover the incest subplot between the 2 main characters.
