They're not. I have no doubt they're actually life savers in many cases.

I remember [my first] puberty. It was horrific. Utterly horrific. Imagine being taken over by an unstoppable force that slowly and torturously reshapes you into the opposite of who you are on the inside. Imagine looking into the mirror, seeing yourself steadily disappear, slowly being replaced by something that is the opposite of you, and being told: "It's all good. You're turning into a man!"

Anything that saves today's trans kids from going through that ordeal is a godsend in my eyes.

Yes, yes, puberty is hard and very confusing for everyone. That's life.

That sounds awful. More than one time I have needed medical intervention to function as I wanted/needed to and relate to you in that way.

Yesterday I talked more to my AS-like 8yo about puberty. I will keep in mind that there are medical options should their be a misalignment between inner and outer gender. Thank you for the passionate reminder.

If puberty blockers are being administered to preserve the child’s health and/or save the child’s life, then it is no more abusive than any vaccination.

If, however, puberty blockers are administered merely to prevent physical development — keeping a promising young gymnast in the body of an 8-year old well into her teens — then that is abusive, especially if the drugs are giving without the child’s consent and/or against the child’s wishes.

Trans-genderization? I don’t know. Is the child diagnosed with some form of dysphoria, or do the parents simply want a child of the opposite gender without going through childbirth again?

Fnord, thank you for giving examples. I have a sense of an issue but often find it hard to give concrete examples. It really gets my goat to think of those cases when the first (preservation) might be stopped (incorrectly called abusive) and that the second (without consent) would be allowed (hidden or otherwise overlooked). Illogical.

I'm talking about the real needs of young trans people. Hypothetical scenarios involving gymnasts and abusive parents are ridiculous and completely irrelevant.

Situations involving gymnasts (and their unscrupulous trainers) are real, not hypothetical. The only two cases I know of with parents wanting a girl instead of a boy and/or keeping their boy a child into his teenage years seem to have shown once in the news and then dropped off the page.

The abuse occurs (probably more often than we know). The real need exists, too. You should not discuss one without discussing the other. Denying it and calling anyone who brings it up a “bigot” does not solve the problem of abuse.

I don't give a flying f**k. What's it got to do with people who have a genuine need?

The problem of abuse is a separate issue to what trans kids face. If you had cancer, would you appreciate someone telling you that you shouldn't have lifesaving treatment because somebody else has abused the medicine?

This DOES occur in medicine every day. They're called pain killers. I know too many ppl who could be much more productive and off disability if they didn't have to fight for the correct pain killers that work for them.

According to Dr. Michelle Cretella, president of the American College of Pediatricians, "Our bodies declare our sex. Biological sex is not assigned. Sex is determined at conception by our DNA. It is stamped into every cell of our bodies."

"Human sexuality is binary. There are at least 6500 genetic differences between men and women. Hormones and surgery cannot and do not change this. An identity is not biological, it is psychological. Identity has to do with thinking and feeling. Thoughts and feelings are not biologically hardwired. Our thinking and feeling may be factually right or factually wrong."

"When supported in their biological sex through natural puberty, the vast majority of gender-confused children get better," she explained. "Yet, we are chemically castrating gender-confused children with puberty blockers. Then, we permanently sterilize many of them by adding cross-sex hormones."

Dr. Cretella is convinced that far from releasing children into who they were "made to be", such treatments actually constitute "institutionalized child abuse".

"Let's be clear. To indoctrinate all children from pre-school forward with the lie that they could be trapped in the wrong body disrupts the very foundation of a child's reality testing. If a child can't trust the reality of their physical bodies, who or what can they trust? Transgender ideology in schools is psychological abuse that often leads to chemical castration, sterilization and surgical mutilation. If that's not child abuse, ladies and gentleman, what is?"

Also according to Dr. Michelle Cretella...

• Studies on twins prove no one is born "trapped in the body of the wrong sex".
• Gender identity is malleable, especially in young children.
• Puberty blockers for gender dysphoria have not been proven safe.
• There are no cases in the scientific literature of gender-dysphoric children discontinuing blockers.
• Cross-sex hormones are associated with dangerous health risks.
• Neuroscience shows that adolescents lack the adult capacity needed for risk assessment.
• There is no proof that affirmation prevents suicide in children.
• Transition-affirming protocol has not solved the problem of transgender suicide.
• The Transition-Affirming Protocol is child abuse.

Bottom line: Is this bigotry or science?

Fnord, do you agree or disagree with that viewpoint? I disagree. I believe in spectrum.

It does not matter whether I agree or disagree with a mere viewpoint -- viewpoints are not facts, and belief proves nothing.

However, I am more inclined to agree with the factual findings of science-based research, especially when promoted by an expert in a relevant field, than I am to agree with untrained non-professionals who: (1) believe their uneducated opinions represent the Absolute Truth, (2) denounce any opposing facts as bigotry, and (3) denounce anyone who even suggests that further scientific study may be needed as mindless, hate-filled bigots.

Fnord, those sources are garbage. I refuse to accept something called "Faithwire" as reliable scientific source, rather than clearly religious based. It has faith in its name! And the [url=https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_College_of_Pediatricians
]American College of Pediatricians[/url], it is a conservative advocacy group that simply adopted a scientific sounding name to give themselves the appearance of legitimacy, they are not actually recognised by the greater Pediatrician community. Their history are in things like fighting against the rights for gays and lesbians to adopt, and advocated for conversion therapy.

Your so called factual sources are a faith based newsletter and an anti LGBT advocacy group.

Ah yes ... I see another Fnord-basher has arrived.

Those sources you poo-poo so inelegantly merely cite the findings of a scientist (which you are not). The scientist is the president of the American College of Pediatricians (which you are not), and a practicing pediatrics physician (which you are not). She is more of an expert on the subject than you will ever be, so I am more inclined to believe her findings that the rantings and ravings of people who will only assert their own uneducated opinions and insult anyone who presents opposing facts.

Deal with it.
