Venezuela has one of the highest murder rates in the world.
Other places like North Korea with low gun-ownership/gun-violence rates: Europe

I don't know how this turned into a thread about gun violence, but US citizens are inflicting one 9/11 worth of gun-victims every few months.
Have 20 years of war on that.

Also, I support taking down statues of slave traders and confederates.

That article uses Ben Shapiro as a source.

The idea of people getting upset at it, that teens signed a petition, and that the company said that they already planned to change the names that were problematic sounding, that is funny. That's just capitalism.

Question is, how does it end?
As a circular firing squad.

So... I was thinking: Marxism is all about blaming the system, but cancel culture is about blaming the individual....

Basically, if there's not enough diversity in a company, Marxist logic would look at the education system, wealth distribution, college fees. But cancel culture looks at the HR guy who has ten people to pick from, only one black, and picks one if the nine white persons.
And he's supposed to be the racist. Or sexist, or whatever.

Cancel culture isn't leftism, really but it follows the conservative attitude of "a few bad apples" - if you get rid of the few individuals that are at fault, then the system will work.

Is it possible the wokescolds are so far away from what leftist thought is sbout that they are actually *thinking* in conservative terms -religious, even... After all, an individual relationship with god is the core of protestantism- when looking for what exactly needs to change?

I am not for cancel culture...I am a liberal. But cancel culture is messed up, you can't just get rid of the messed up parts about history, those have to still be acknowledged so the idea of just getting rid of stuff that can be used to confront history does not seem the right approach. Like you have to acknowledge what has happened already the whole cancel thing could try to delete real parts of history that are important to learn about. So that is my concern, like yeah some things christopher columbus monuments I agree with those being taken down, but could be useful to make a museum that explains the statues taken down and why so they wont be up in a public space causing offense but people could still view the statues in a museum presumably documenting american history for educational purposes. So yeah I get the point of not continuing to glorify a racist figure by keeping their statue up, but may be best to move such statues to museums where they can be explained with context. Rather than trying to erase it.

<Sarcasm>
The only way to avoid firing squads is therefore to never take down anything that represents obsolete ideas, like slavery.

I live on Germany. Turns out, a democratic society could decide to take Nazi symbols off buildings and then decide that's enough, no need to tear up the highways built by the Nazis.
So where does it stop: when a democratic majority of people sees more value in keeping the thing. That's where it stops.

Cancel Culture I disagree with because I don't think that things should be canceled. Marxism I disagree with, because it goes against my stance on life issues. Individualism I stand for, because I feel that people should be able to just be themselves and not have to be forced to conform.

Well I believe you should be allowed to withdraw your support for a controversial figure without demanding everyone to do the same.

Oliver Stone claims ‘cancel culture’ would see him attacked if classic films came out today

Quote:
Director Oliver Stone has lashed out at “cancel culture“ and said he believes he would be “attacked” if his films were released in today’s climate.

During an interview on Sirius XM, the filmmaker claimed he would be cast out of Hollywood over movies such as Platoon, Natural Born Killers, and Wall Street.

I’m really out of touch. I can tell you that if I made any of my films, I don’t think I’d last. I’d be vilified. I’d be attacked. Shamed. Whatever you want to call that … culture, cancel f***ing culture,” he said.

“I mean, it’s just impossible. I would have had to step on so many sensitivities,” he continued. ”You have to have some freedom to make a movie, unfortunately.

“You have to be rude. You can be bad. And you’re going to have do to these things like step on toes. Holy cow. Do you think I could have made any one of those films?”

In 2017, former Playboy model Carrie Stevens and actors Patricia Arquette and Melissa Gilbert accused Stone of sexual misconduct

Stone did not respond to Stevens and Arquette’s claims, but issued a comment to Deadline regarding Gilbert’s accusations of a “humiliating and horrid” audition process for 1991’s The Doors.

“We auditioned dozens of actors for roles in The Doors and it was made clear from the outset that our film was going to be a raunchy, no-holds-barred rock ‘n’ roll movie,” Stone said in a statement.

Interesting view on "cancel culture"...

Quote:
"We're used to criticism. Criticism is kosher in the work that we do, criticism's great," she said. "What cancel culture is about is not criticism, it is about punishment, it is about making a person radioactive, it is about taking away their job."

Quote:
Weiss said cancel culture isn't "just about punishing the sinner," but also a "secondary boycott of people who would deign to speak to that person or appear on a platform with that person." She added that if conversation around disagreement becomes impossible then the only way to resolve conflict would be violence.

Quote:
He added that the late U.S. Rep. John Lewis, who died at 80 from cancer on July 17, also had a "point of view that was divergent from the consensus at the time that he was alive." Williams said that Lewis' stance seems "so clear to us now," but at the time Lewis was going against "consensus."

"We need to have all the points of view that we can have because we don’t know what the truth is actually going to shake out to be 10, 20, 50 years down the road," Williams said. "We need to challenge our consensus views, and when we think about John Lewis, we should think about that was a guy who saw something wrong and stood up and spoke up for it, and he didn’t just adhere to the prevailing consensus at the time."

Stumbled across this piece today. It's relevant for those who might question whether cancel culture actually exists. He details exactly how people tried to derail his career.

What he is saying is it has always been around but we just didn't call it that then, correct?

Back then it was called boycotting or shunned. Plus people have always gotten criticized for what they have said in the media and people would speak against it.

I guess he disagrees with the name "cancel culture?"

Saturday Night Live’ Comments on COVID-19 Vaccine Plan

Quote:
Eleven months into the COVID-19 pandemic and the FDA approved the emergency use of a vaccine from Pfizer. Just a day later, NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” offered its commentary on the situation, using its Dec. 12 episode cold open sketch as an opportunity for Kate McKinnon to portray Dr. Anthony Fauci and Heidi Gardner to take on Dr. Deborah Birx.

Sarcasm:
Whoa,WTF
The had a women play a man. I am offended, how dare a women play a man. Kate can not possibly know Dr. Fauci’s truth. And OMG how offensive is SNL’s appropriation of cross dressers?
CANCEL SNL, CANCEL SNL NOW.

Where is the outrage?

Oh wait the target is an old white man. I forgot about of the hierarchy of oppression.

Another example of "cancel culture" is the recent voice recastings on the Simpsons (Apu, etc.)

I feel like we need some proper examples of what cancel culture is, whether it is extreme reaction to unfounded accusations, or a community of the public that are trying to ensure that there are proper consequences for actions like saying something irresponsible.

Problem is, these two very different things often get jumbled together, along with changing social mores (various things previously considered acceptable in mainstream society becoming unacceptable, due to the efforts of activists to educate the public).
