I have six straight days of work ahead of me. Dull, stressful, soul-crushing work. Today is my day off. I woke up late and dealt with my OCD and I was finally going to get to go on Photoshop and draw for a few hours. NOPE. Computer decided it's time to update. I just updated it last week, but not good enough. Constant updates are required. The computer decides I don't get to draw now and it stands. It has control. I don't. This is every day of my life. This is every day of my life. This is every day of my life. I'm hysterical. I was going to sketch on paper instead, but then the computer said "Updates 100% complete," so I put the sketchbook away again. NOPE. Multiple updates in a row are needed! How many? WHO KNOWS?! Now, the computer finally finished updating and now Photoshop is opening. Slowwwwwwwwwly. Slowwwwwwwwwly. Slowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwly. It feels like torture to me.

I looked up a way to stop computer updates that involves going into sub-menus and I'll probably do that later when I'm less hysterical.

Oh, this is probably an issue of Windows build # 1909 or less VS. Windows build # 2004.

I could bore you quite a lot with all the best ways of responding to this thing but I'll just say this; talk to I.T. people you know personally if you know any, because this is just as much a headache for systems specialists in international companies.

It's a fairly new factory-made Lenovo laptop. Computer updates have always made me extremely nervous no matter what computer I've had. They seem to always be perfectly timed to when I absolutely can't stand waiting any longer to get on here and draw.

The larger issue is that, I feel like other artists decide to draw and just sit down and do it and I don't understand why I can't do that. There's almost always something like this happening. If it isn't the update, it's something else. My entire life is structured around having a little time to draw, but apparently it's not enough.

I understand - I'd have a meltdown over that too. Spontaneous updates are total BS.

Well if you're using an open source editor you could try Linux.

I for one keep two machines like this around with Wacom screens, not that I get around to drawing much, I'm into CAD, but they're both Lenovo too & I've had driver problems crashing these Windows versions for a good month or so.

The good news for you is that I sort of pay attention to catastrophes like this for a living, the bad news is that I don't foresee this one being resolved efficiently.

Long story short I wouldn't want to run ANY Windows laptop without update KB4571744 :(

One time, a friend wanted a few business cards printed, so he could present an idea at a trade fair in our town. I quickly laid out two cards side by side, and then copied them four times to fill a page. We ran them off on nice card stock and off he went. After the show, we noticed that on each copy, the telephone number was incremented one higher. I don't use Windows now.

Knowing your way around Windows (or Mac OSX) to the greatest extent possible is a marketable skill nobody can describe.

We legitimately do not have words for that as computing professionals.

Sometimes I think Microsoft made Windows just to make us meltdown--but my NT colleagues seem to have the same response.

Don't get me wrong, this is absolutely worthwhile stuff to know & there's a lot of amazing capability Windows doesn't get much credit for.

I forgot to mention I actually worked on part of Windows 10. :jester:

Nothing is where you think it should be, same goes for the physical world in most cases, but in any case that's not to say those things do not exist.

Ah yes, Windows will reset your computer now on its own to update. That happens to me but I like my phone so I play on that and browse on it so no worries on my end.

Companies will now force everyone to update their systems. Nintendo is the same way, will lock you out of eshop or prevent you from playing certain games unless you update the game or your system. I also notice Nintendo has automatically downloaded updates onto my switch. Windows is the same way and so is Playstation. It's like they still own our systems just because they made them.

Firstly be aware that doing the following may cause some issues and the first two once done cannot be undone. If you are in any way concerned that doing any of this may cause you problems skip to step three.

Step one is download Ccleaner (free version) and run it being aware that this will delete your entire browsing history and any recent files you have opened if you click on all the options. It will also empty the recycle bin and downloads folder so ensure you have nothing in there you want. I advise bookmarking any websites you often use to avoid losing them.

Step two run the inbuilt disk cleanup and choose C: then when the first window opens click on "clean up system files" select C: again and wait. This can take a while to run! Once this part is done click on all the little check boxes and click OK. A warning may come up to confirm if you are certain you want to delete these files; it won't touch your personal files apart from the downloads folder. It will also empty the recycle bin so ensure you have nothing in there you want.

Note on previous Windows installations option; if you delete these you will be unable to revert back to them. From a personal point of view I just delete them.

Step three run the inbuilt disk defrag program. Select drive C: and click optimise. This will take some time to complete.

Hope this helps you.

Corporations have to steal all the information about you that they can just to stay in business, competing with others who are doing it. When they update "your" product, they also get their update of data. Even farmers are being forced to rely on slow, expensive service for tractor repairs they used to do themselves because there's a computer involved now. Of course, hackers can fight back.

If you only want to work offline, you can just disable internet access and then Windows can't be able to update. There's also a setting that tells Windows you're on a "metered connection" which should stop it from downloading anything large, and there are options to make Windows stop trying to update between certain hours. You can also choose to defer updates for a couple of weeks or so. And there are some third-party utilities that purport to turn off automatic updates, though they seem to be in constant war with Microsoft which will typically push an update that renders an update-managing or update-blocking utility useless. I also wouldn't put it past Microsoft to remove some of those built-in Windows update controls. The other problem is that by the time you read this, it might be too late to solve your current problem with it.

Personally I wouldn't want to depend on any computer that wasn't somehow configured to allow the user to control Microsoft updates, and I wouldn't want to allow any Microsoft update to Windows 10 without first finding out whether or not it was safe. Don't get me started on all the underhand tracking that Windows does, though I will say that it probably can mostly be stopped one way or another, and that I'd rather do a few days' work on stopping it than to let Microsoft track me as it would like to.

Farmers are also fighting back through the courts. I hope they win. Seems to me that Orwell's 1984 has pretty much arrived, the main thing he got wrong being that it's corporate bodies more than governments who are making it happen. I suppose governments are happy with that, as it costs them less to let companies do the dirty work for them and to take the public wrath for it.

This is the OP's personal computer I believe. Pretty much all operating systems come with the option of manual updates. It is just a matter of knowing how to do that. If you do not know how to do on your system there are people here that do. Google and Youtube have instructions and demonstrations about how to do most anything in life. It is always a good idea to do a backup before an update.

I tried YouTube for instructions on how to install a metal roof on my house last year. The videos tend to be done by guys who are doing their first job, not their hundredth. There are staunch advocates both for putting the screws on the ridges and for in the valleys. I have had better luck on Windoze frustrations.
I once spent about three months wrestling with Win 7, and finally had to order disks specific to my laptop to restore it. While waiting for the mail, I decided to try Linux, and had everything I wanted running before the disks came. I have used it ever since. I update it when even I can tell it is obsolete.
