the best-sounding affordable new strings i've found to be Nylgut.

So, in the context of recording there's an expectation you'll be changing strings more than once a day. This is largely so that you can be sure your tone will be consistent because they become darker as they get grubby.

If you're just playing for fun it doesn't really matter, but a tone that sounds good on your own might sound like steaming dog turds in a mix.

For folks who can't stand the sound of new strings, roll back on your tone knob to compensate.

For folks like me who just got a single pickup and volume knob, you just gotta suck it up.

Yeah, I don't know the exact number without looking it up, but I know it's measured in hours.
I don't even keep track of how many hours I play, I just play.

With acoustic instruments it might be a bit different - no tone knob means no way of dialing back the tone of too-bright new strings!

Crate vs. Ampeg vs. Marshall 8O

I must gave been really nice beacuse I got the guitarlele I wished for for Christmas
Guitarlele is a mongrel of guitar and ukulele - small, six strings, tuned a-e-c-g-d-a (like a guitar with a capo at 5).
Some men claim it has too little space for fingers but I had the opposite problem with a full-scale guitar - it's an instrument for a man-sized hands, I couldn't reach some configurations.
Also, much smaller and and more lightweight than a regular guitar, it's great for travel.

I tried ukulele but I didn't like its lack of any bass, it just didn't sound good to me solo (but great in a band with something else providing bass).

Interesting.

One of my guitars has a 24" scale instead of the normal 25.5". It's good for small hands.

What's the distance between the bridge and the nut on the Guitarlele?

43 cm (17 in).
For comparison, my ukulele is 35 cm (13.75 in) and my guitar is 65 cm (25.5 in).

Oh wow, that really is small.
There's some student guitars that have a 57 cm/22.5" scale necks. I wonder how you'd find one of those to play.

The smallest student's guitar, 1/4, is around the same size (they claim it's around 44cm scale).
My friend wants to get one - she isn't as exp'd in realtime transpositions as I am but wants something small and lightweight, too - so I might organize to buy her one for a birthday and check out.

What do you like to play?
What sort of gear do you have?

I can't believe I only just found this thread. I bet there's a military aircraft thread I haven't found yet too...

Anyway guitar is one of my earliest and longest standing interests. I play a lot of my own stuff and lots of alternative, rock etc etc. I know a lot of Frank Black songs.
I like to play fingerstyle acoustic.

As for gear:

Guitars
1963 Yamaha Classical (solid top back and sides)
1983 Tasman by Maton CW 40 steel string Acoustic dreadnought (little known Japanese made Maton budget line, solid top)
Maton SRS 70 acoustic electric Dreadnought (solid top back and sides)
2010 Gibson Les Paul studio 50's tribute honey burst
1985 Burny Super Grade (Les Paul copy) sunburst
2003 crafted in Japan Fender 1962 reissue Telecaster Custom candy apple red
1982 Ibanez Blazer H+H
2003 crafted in Japan Fender Mustang Bass - Sea foam green metallic with GT stripes

I'm incredibly lucky to have stumbled across these amps -

Marshall 50th anniversary 1 watt amps:
JMP-1c - will have to be torn from my dead hands.
JVM-1h - the best all round small tube amp I have ever played

I have a small collection of pedals as well, the stars of that show would be (though they don't get much use)
1983 boss DM2 Delay
90's Electro Harmonix Guitar synth reissue
80's Boss CS2 Compressor

I would generally use a simple pedal board, with:
An overdrive, either an 80's Boss sd-1, an EHX Soul Food (klon copy) or a Boss Waza Craft Blues Driver
Boss CE2b Chorus (pretty much the same circuit as the CE2 with extra control and waaay cheaper)
Wilson Haze Uni-Vibe copy

Cool selection of gear.

This seems to be typical with guitar players. We all get GAS.

Tell me about it. I'm pretty good these days, but every now and then I'll start stalking the internet looking at things and end up getting carried away and buying something I don't need...
