Hi everyone. I am an adult who is not currently diagnosed, but my therapist is encouraging me to get tested for ASD. I keep reading stories by people who got diagnosed as adults and every single person sounds like me. I feel like I am so close to understanding why my life has been so confusing and difficult. But testing is difficult to attain in my area (few qualified professionals.) And I am so lonely. I love my wife but she is neurotypical. Understanding that I'm upset is a lot different than understanding why I'm upset, or helping me not be upset.

Welcome to WP. I think you will find some nice folk here.

I got diagnosed in 2019 and the big delay for me was that my insurance company was confused--well, actually, they were flat out wrong. The kind of provider they told me I needed was incorrect. They told me to find a licensed psychologist with ABA certification. WRONG! And very difficult to find (I tried). It took me months to stumble across someone kind enough to explain that the ABA certification was only relevant for treatment and was not needed to perform an assessment.

I think of the diagnosis as having provided my bride with a few more pages of my Owner's Manual. (She thinks of it as my excuse for saying "I have a doctor's note for that!")

it is such a relief to finally understand all those "whys" and painful interactions of the past. So helpful to have that understanding going forward, too. Welcome! I was so relieved to find others who understood. Glad you are with us.

diagnosed at age 68, what a change of perspective!

Hello. Yes. If you are on the spectrum and you find out about it, it explains lots of things.
I am waiting to be assessed myself.
