does glam metal count

Why not?

Some might disagree, but we are here to list out favorite heavy metal bands. Why should -that- be dependent on what other people think? It's YOUR favorite heavy metal band. If you want to say Slipknot, Poison, or Aerosmith, or even Johnny Cash is your favorite heavy metal musician - go right ahead. I won't be mad.

I WILL be mad at people who bash other people's musical interest. So far, there hasn't really been much of that. PLEASE keep it that way.

Alphabetically:

AC/DC, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Anthrax, Biohazard, Cannibal Corpse, Children of Bodom, Dark Funeral, Darkthrone, Deicide, Dimmu Borgir, Disturbed, Dream Theater, Faith No More, Godsmack, Guns n' Roses, Hammerfall, Impaled Nazarene, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Korn, Lacuna Coil, Life of Agony, Live, Megadeth, Metallica, Mötley Crüe, Nightwish, Opeth, Oxymoron, Pantera, Quiet Riot, Rage Against The Machine, Rammstein, Sepultura, Slayer, Slipknot, Static-X, System of a Down, Tesla, Twisted Sister, Van Halen.

I'm not sure if all of these are "really" heavy metal (e.g. Aerosmith), but I listed them anyway. They're metal enough for me 8)

I like Disturbed, Guns n' Roses, Live and Hammerfall best.

I noticed that it doesn't matter what genre a band is as long as you like them, so I'll list "The Pixies", and list them under "Alternative Metal/Black Metal".

Halo isn't bad though, they're on the same label as Pig Destroyer, I believe, and are originally from Australia.

90's

Alice in Chains, Faith No More, White/Rob Zombie, Ugly Kid Joe, Pantera, Rage Against The Machine, Pride And Glory

Power Metal

Judas Priest (Halford Mk. I), Iron Maiden (Paul Di'Anno, Bruce Dickenson Mk. I), Saxon (earlier albums), Sisters of Mercy, The Cult, The Damned, The Jam, Sabbat, Warlock

For lighter rock, I would add: Status Quo, Joan Jett, Magnum

Now, with two exceptions, all of these groups have something in common.

I've liked many, but Death and Dream Theater would have to be the top two.

I haven't seen anybody mention Cryptopsy. Somebody might have mentioned Nile. I haven't seen the Red Chord anywhere either.

I just recently unearthed an excellent underground metal band called Rosetta. They're sort of like progressive hardcore doom metal with an extra helping of awesome.
