OK yesterday I couldn't watch age-restricted videos on YouTube, as it wanted me to show a photo of my ID for proof of age before it could let me continue - even though I was still already signed in. Is this genuine? YouTube already knows that I'm over 18 because it says so in my account. I'm just cautious because I've heard that there's a lot of scamming going on online right now and I don't want my ID to end up being stolen.

Ps. If you must know, I have a (embarrassing) burp fetish and for some weird reason YouTube flags videos with burps in as age-restricted, also I like searching for disturbing things like dead bodies and stuff, which is also considered age-restricted.

So is it safe for me to reveal my ID to YouTube? I use the YouTube app by the way.

Being the cynic I am, I would say please treat this with caution. Even if it's not a scam, they'll still have your ID and could sell it to third parties. Doing some research would help as well.

So how can I get to watch the age-restricted videos? YouTube is making anything age-restricted these days. It won't let me watch anything unless I give it a photo of my ID or type in the numbers of my credit card (although I don't have a credit card). Seems a bit fishy to me.

That's new. I don't look at age-restricted content but I've only heard of them wanting to have you signed in to view it. This does seem odd. Be wary.

I was curious so I googled it. I'm American but this is apparently a thing in Europe? Seems weird to me. You could maybe try using a VPN to access American YouTube. They don't ask us for ID.

Most Youtube content creators are moving or at least cloning
their content to the LBRY platform as it's less restrictive.

They have two web interfaces:
https://lbry.tv
https://odysee.com

The app can be found here:

Sounds fake to me. Not something Utube would do...ask for that.

YouTube is expanding its age gate verification requirements in Europe.

YouTube says some of its users will need to confirm their age in the coming months before watching age-restricted content. That includes many music videos that contain explicit content.

In the official blog post announcing the upcoming change, YouTube says it is to comply with EU laws. The European Union’s Audiovisual Media Services Directive requires age gating restricted content. That means users in protected regions must submit their proof of age. Documents include a valid ID or a credit card indicating the user is over the age of 18.

I think it's stupid, having to actually take a photo of your personal details and send it to YouTube.
It's just YouTube, not a porn site or gambling site.
They turn off the comments section on videos that have anything to do with kids, even kids shows.
So over the top.

It seems to let me watch age-restricted videos now. Oh well, maybe it was a scam. I never sent my ID picture.

It's gone back to demanding my ID again.
But I still feel apprehensive about sending a picture of my ID to YouTube. I have searched it and it seems like it is not a hoax to steal people's ID but I'm still wary.

Honestly kids these days are so mollycoddled, that us adults have to risk getting our identities stolen or hacked just so they can...be mollycoddled.

Here are some simple methods to circumvent this restriction:

Install Opera web browser and use it's built in VPN service.
Once installed click on VPN in the address bar and select Americas in
the in the Virtual Network drop down list.

It should be noted that Opera browser is now owned by
Chinese consortium which has raised some concerns
about it's security.

Or you can download and install Freetube. This is a cross platform
application that allows you to watch Youtube videos without being tracked.

FreeTube is a YouTube client for Windows, Mac, and Linux built around using YouTube more privately. You can enjoy your favorite content and creators without your habits being tracked. All of your user data is stored locally and never sent or published to the internet. FreeTube grabs data by scraping the information it needs (with either local methods or by optionally utilizing the Invidious API). With many features similar to YouTube, FreeTube has become one of the best methods to watch YouTube privately on desktop.

Linux users can try straw-viewer or the fork pipe-viewer.

A lightweight application (fork of straw-viewer) for searching and playing videos from YouTube.

This fork parses the YouTube website directly and relies on the invidious instances only as a fallback method.
