There is a private school in the building where I work that is for children with complex challenges. Today I witnesses a child about 14 years old being restrained after punching an aide. What causes violent outbursts like this?

I won't pretend to understand that particular situation, but from personal experience I have unbearable feelings and anxiety when my environment is especially not supportive or understanding. I need a release. As a women with decent self control for an ASD person, I have never punched somebody (although I inadvertently hurt loved ones on rare occasion) instead I punched walls or more often internalized it (self-injury). Now nearing 50, myself and the ASD women I know have learned to hold ice or wrap ourselves under dark covers to get through these episodes without injury or damage.

Oh wait, in m late teens I did punch somebody (in the stomach) - but I had perceived that as a safety issue. The person did not retaliate and I was left alone.
