Australia has ‘deeply held concerns’ on ‘systematic abuse’ of Uyghurs: Foreign Minister

Foreign Affairs Minister Marise Payne says the Morrison government has “deeply held concerns” on Communist China’s horrific treatment of the Uyghur population including “credible reports of the systematic abuse and torture of women”.

The Chinese Embassy in Canberra held a bizarre press conference on Wednesday in which Ambassador Cheng Jingye downplayed reports of exploitation of the Uyghurs and attacked the Australian media for reporting on the human rights abuses.

In an exclusive interview with Sky News, Minister Payne said the Commonwealth continued to “hold those concerns” about the treatment of ethnic minorities in Xinjiang province.

“We have been very clear about our deeply held concerns about the human rights situation in Xinjiang,” she said.

“Particularly as it relates to forced labor, to re-education, to restrictions on freedom of religion, potential restrictions on reproductive rights including forced sterilisations, and also very credible reports of the systematic abuse and torture of women”.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken previously came out against the treatment of the Muslim minority group declaring Beijing continues to commit “genocide and crimes against humanity”

The Australian Strategic Policy Instituted has claimed there are more than 380 re-education camps in the region which is up more than 40 per cent from previous estimates.

Earlier this year the BBC exposed the horrific treatment of the Uyghur population, highlighting the treatment of females in the camps which included forced sterilisation.

Minister Payne said the government had raised these concerns at the “highest levels” and continued to advocate for the high commissioner for human rights to review the situation in Xinjiang firsthand.
