I honestly can't believe algorithms are used for almost life-and-death decisions these days... when one of the biggest technology companies fails so epically at such an inconsequential thing. This truly is what convinced me that algorithms are sh*t...

The year before last, The Algorithm took a down a whole load of robot combat videos.... for animal cruelty. The robot-fighting community was up in arms about it, though some joked that it proved YouTube had become sentient and was trying to protect its own kind.

Since when is taking down a video game a "life-and-death decision"?

You seem to be exaggerating the importance of video games on YouTube.

No, videos on YT is what I called inconsequential... but algorithms are used to decide whether someone should be convicted or not it seems, and that is what's concerning when they fail at such a scale as to think Dota is porn.

Last I knew, a conviction could only be reached by a jury of one's peers.

You said "video games" in an earlier post; now you say "data".  Which is it?

Just to clarify, anything can be data to an algorithm -- an algorithm's purpose is to examine data.

It seems there is a video game called "Dota", I'm guessing that's what Weirdness is talking about.

Edit to add this link. Someone was apparently "Wrongfully Accused by an Algorithm".

I thought "Dota" was another typo, when it is actually only another gamer term.

This being the case, Weirdness should take his complaint to Blizzard Entertainment AND YouTube.

This seems entirely YT's fault... the fact it relies on algorithms so widely... I mean, at least they responded to the appeal quickly, but it still makes me think that an overall society-wide usage of algorithms will result in disaster...

It sometimes takes years to tweak a single algorithm to get it to work correctly.  Sometimes it also takes a disaster -- like a crashed 737 airliner -- to even expose an algorithmic flaw.

That is indeed probably the worst failure in history... twice...

At this point, he was talking about algorithms in general.

Not convicted, arrested.

This is to show that AI is very unlikely to replace humans on tasks that require judgement, at least for the time being is just scifi.

It already has, why do you think fake news has gotten so bad? The truth is boring and algorithms know the masses like sensational tabloid nonsense.

Ah right, since I was just looking for an example of the kind of thing Weirdness was concerned about I only read as far as "his case may be the first known account of an American being wrongfully arrested based on a flawed match from a facial recognition algorithm, according to experts on technology and the law."

Now that the "problem" has been revealed and a possible scapegoat has been found, what is anyone going to actually DO about it?

Besides post more complaints, I mean...

A variant of World of Warcraft.
