Coronavirus originated in a lab requires investigation
But more generally, to avoid unintended consequences resulting from the use of SARS - “the virus responsible for COVID-19” or “the COVID-19 virus”.

A "coronavirus" is a generalized type of virus. There are many coronaviruses---many of them cause colds
The SARS-COV-2 virus is not the SARS 1 virus that caused the outbreak in 2002. It is a coronavirus; it is not THE coronavirus.
COVID-19 was one day away from being called COVID-20. It was named on December 31, 2019.

The Australian's Adam Creighton says we keep talking about the Wuhan lab leak theory when we really should be talking about the "natural emergence" theory – of which there's "no evidence".
"We keep talking about the lab-leak theory but we really should be talking about the "natural emergence" theory," he told Sky News host Alan Jones.
"Because that is the less likely if you like – there's actually no evidence so far for natural emergence.
"They can't find the animal – I mean they found the animal for previous coronavirus in six to twelve months – but they still haven't found anything 18 months on.
"And they can't find any trace of COVID-19 early strains of it in sick patients – so it's increasingly likely it was a leak."

Sky News host Alan Jones says “what was a conspiracy to damage Trump is now the truth” following reports Chinese military members were enlisted on the oversight committee for the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
“This Wuhan stuff gets worse,” Mr Jones said.
“Not that there are any surprises, but we now learn that the laboratory at the centre of the coronavirus leak had listed members of the Chinese military on its oversight committee and allegedly included international scientists without their knowledge.”
Mr Jones pointed to news of a book titled ‘The Infinite Error: The Secret Story of a Pandemic That Should Have Been Avoided’, authored by Fabrizio Gatti.
“He’s saying that the Wuhan Institute of Virology deleted all the names of the Chinese military officials and the international scientists as well after the author contacted the scientists to ask about their roles,” Mr Jones said.
“Fabrizio Gatti asserts that the ‘Chinese Army is involved in this huge catastrophe’.
“Didn’t the Trump Administration say the lab was being used for military experiments? Didn’t the Trump Administration say that the coronavirus came from the laboratory?
“And didn’t the Trump-haters argue that these were conspiracy theories?
“It seems that what was a conspiracy to damage Trump is not the truth; I bet you’re not surprised.”

Partial SARS-CoV-2 sequences from early outbreaks in Wuhan were removed from a U.S. government database by the scientists who deposited them

Deleted Coronavirus Genome Sequences Trigger Scientific Intrigue

Efforts to study the early stages of the coronavirus pandemic have received help from a surprising source. A biologist in the United States has ‘excavated’ partial SARS-CoV-2 genome sequences from the beginnings of the pandemic’s probable epicentre in Wuhan, China, that were deposited — but later removed — from a US government database.
The partial genome sequences address an evolutionary conundrum about the early genetic diversity of the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, although scientists emphasize that they do not shed light on its origins. Nor is it fully clear why researchers at Wuhan University asked for the sequences to be removed from the Sequence Read Archive (SRA), a repository for raw sequencing data maintained by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), part of the US National Institutes of Health (NIH).
“These sequences are informative, they’re not transformative,” says Jesse Bloom, a viral evolutionary geneticist at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Washington, who describes in a 22 June preprint how he recovered the sequences.

Bloom discovered the sequences after searching for genomic data from the pandemic’s early stages. A research paper from May 2020 contained a table of publicly available sequence data, which included entries Bloom had not come across. The sequences were associated with a paper in which researchers used nanopore-sequencing technology to detect SARS-CoV-2 genetic material in samples from people. That study was published in the journal Small in June 2020, having been posted on bioRxiv in March of that year.
When Bloom looked for the sequences in the SRA using the details listed in the May 2020 paper, the database returned no entries. The SRA keeps sequences in cloud storage maintained by Google, and Bloom wondered whether he could find archived versions of the sequences on cloud servers. This approach worked, and Bloom was able to recover data from 50 samples, 13 of which contained enough raw data to generate partial genome sequences.
Evolutionary mystery
The sequences help to solve an evolutionary mystery about the early stages of the pandemic, says Bloom. The earliest viral sequences from Wuhan are from individuals linked to the city’s Huanan Seafood Market in December 2019, which was initially thought to be where the coronavirus first jumped from animals to people. But the seafood-market sequences are more distantly related to SARS-CoV-2’s closest relatives in bats — the most likely ultimate origin of the virus — than are later sequences, including one collected in the United States.
That was surprising, says Bloom, because you would expect that viruses from the early stages of Wuhan’s epidemic would be most closely related to SARS-CoV-2’s relatives that infect bats. The recovered sequences, which were probably collected in January and February 2020, show this to be the case — they are more closely related to the bat viruses than are the sequences from people linked to the seafood market.
This adds to a growing body of evidence, including reports of probable cases dating back to November 2019, that the first human cases of COVID-19 were not associated with the Huanan Seafood Market, say Bloom and other scientists.

There seems to have been some recent developments...
The revelation by Ian Lipkin, a professor at Columbia University honoured by China for work on the first Sars epidemic earlier this century, undermines the official Beijing narrative on the origins.
Prof Lipkin told a documentary by the director Spike Lee that he learned of 'the new outbreak' on December 15, even repeating the date for clarification.
Yet China claims there were only five known patients before that time in Wuhan – a city of 11 million people – with the earliest confirmed case of a patient with the novel coronavirus supposedly cropping up just one week earlier.
The World Health Organisation was not tipped off for another 16 days after Taiwan raised the alarm.
<...>
Prof Lipkin, who caught Covid-19 soon after his return to the United States, was a key figure in the fierce debate over origins of the virus and attempts to stifle the lab-leak hypothesis by the scientific establishment.
The eminent expert condemned blaming of China, praised its efforts to control the outbreak and co-authored a hugely influential commentary in Nature Medicine journal that ruled out plausibility of 'any type of laboratory-based scenario'.
He is head of a unit at Columbia's Mailman School of Public Health, which won grants worth $1.34 million (£970,000) between 2018 and 2020 from EcoHealth Alliance, a charity that also funded controversial research into bat viruses at Wuhan Institute of Virology.
British scientist Peter Daszak, the charity's $460,368- a-year (£332,118) president, played a central role in labelling concerns over the possibility of a laboratory incident sparking the pandemic as 'conspiracy theory'.
Yet Prof Lipkin admitted his view changed after learning that high-risk experiments on bat coronaviruses were carried out by Wuhan scientists in low-biosafety labs.
'If they've got hundreds of bat samples that are coming in, and some of them aren't characterised, how would they know whether this virus was or wasn't in this lab? They wouldn't,' he said in June.

More information about the research lab...
The documents were released in connection with ongoing Freedom of Information Act litigation by The Intercept against the National Institutes of Health. The Intercept is making the full documents available to the public.
“This is a roadmap to the high-risk research that could have led to the current pandemic,” said Gary Ruskin, executive director of U.S. Right To Know, a group that has been investigating the origins of Covid-19.
One of the grants, titled “Understanding the Risk of Bat Coronavirus Emergence,” outlines an ambitious effort led by EcoHealth Alliance president Peter Daszak to screen thousands of bat samples for novel coronaviruses. The research also involved screening people who work with live animals. The documents contain several critical details about the research in Wuhan, including the fact that key experimental work with humanized mice was conducted at a biosafety level 3 lab at Wuhan University Center for Animal Experiment — and not at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, as was previously assumed. The documents raise additional questions about the theory that the pandemic may have begun in a lab accident, an idea that Daszak has called “heinous.”
<...>
According to Richard Ebright, a molecular biologist at Rutgers University, the documents contain critical information about the research done in Wuhan, including about the creation of novel viruses. “The viruses they constructed were tested for their ability to infect mice that were engineered to display human type receptors on their cell,” Ebright wrote to The Intercept after reviewing the documents. Ebright also said that the documents make it clear that two different types of novel coronaviruses were able to infect humanized mice. “While they were working on SARS-related coronavirus, they were carrying out a parallel project at the same time on MERS-related coronavirus,” Ebright said, referring to the virus that causes Middle East Respiratory Syndrome.

China has absolutely no credibility.
It astounds me that some people don't know that.
I thought this post was worth revisiting.

Imagine the reaction should both claims turn out to have been correct

Ambicious science + insufficient safety + the whole state trying to cover it up to avoid paying astronomical compensations?
That actually wouldn't be impossible. No global conspiracy, no impossible technology, just regular irresponsibility with powerfull tools and lack of transparency.
Like Chernobyl.
