Coronavirus originated in a lab requires investigation

The World Health Organisations Director-General has declared the first report into the origins of COVID-19 shows that the “assessment was not extensive enough” and the theory the virus originated in a laboratory “requires further investigation”.
"The team also visited several laboratories in Wuhan and considered the possibility that the virus entered the human population as a result of a laboratory incident”, Mr Adhanom Ghebreyesus told the UN.
"However, I do not believe that this assessment was extensive enough. Further data and studies will be needed to reach more robust conclusions.
“Although the team has concluded that a laboratory leak is the least likely hypothesis, this requires further investigation, potentially with additional missions involving specialist experts, which I am ready to deploy."
The highly anticipated and delayed report carried out by the WHO in a joint study with China was handed down which states the theory the virus originated from a lab was the “least likely” cause.
An intermediate animal host contracting the virus and spreading to humans was deemed as the “most likely’ cause.
However, the WHO chief and 14 other countries have voiced frustrations with the report and claimed China lacked transparency and withheld access to the investigators in their month long trip to Wuhan.
Jamie Metzl, a former NSC official in Hillary Clinton's team and a member of the WHO advisory committee, told 60 Minutes journalist Lesley Stahl that the WHO team were not orchestrating a proper investigation.
“I wouldn't really call what's happened now an investigation. It's essentially a highly-chaperoned, highly-curated study tour,” he said.
“Everybody around the world is imagining this is some kind of full investigation. It’s not. The group of experts only saw what the Chinese government wanted them to see.”

The claim that "Coronavirus originated in a lab" is bogus. Running the same investigation over and over again while expecting a different answer each time is a sign of insanity. Sort of like those 11,000 votes trump kept asking for -- they never existed, either.

Perth USAsia Centre CEO Gordan Flake says the lack of transparency from China over COVID-19 has effectively undermined the findings handed down in the World Health Organisation’s report into the origins of the pandemic.
The reports listed four possible sources for the coronavirus, concluding it most likely spread to humans through an animal.
“Both the Australian government and the United States government have already come out quite clearly indicating their concerns about missing data, a lack of access to data,” Mr Flake told Sky News.
“The WHO themselves were quite clear about how controlled their visits to China were.
“Given the tremendous and ongoing cost of this pandemic transparency is key, and our ability to prevent future such pandemics depend on transparency, depend on cooperation.
“Unfortunately that’s not what we’re getting at this point from the People’s Republic of China and that in turn has undermined this WHO report and any faith that I think the world can have on the report and on our understanding of its origins and what likely implications are there for future pandemics.”

New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern’s decision not to support Australia in criticizing the WHO’s investigation into the origins of COVID-19 will “come back to bite her”, according to Social Commentator Prue MacSween.
“This woman is a politician in the true sense of the word," she told Sky News host Chris Smith.
“She’s very likable, she plays the people and sadly she’s showing her true colours with this.
“It will come back to bite her on the bum when maybe China takes up residence there one day."

Yeah. As pure as the driven snow.

Actually I am interested in the numerous theories regarding the origins of Covid.
I liked the ‘Coronavirus’ name better, too.
I pictured an amoeba on a beach, in a tourist sombrero, drinking famous Mexican beer from the bottle.

Krystal and Saagar (The Hill) going over the details with Bret Weinstein. One of the key things they discussed was serial passaging vs. actual gene splicing - two very different things, the first doesn't require manually grafting things on to stock pharmaceutical backbones of historical viruses nor does it require human beings calculating the results ahead of time, it's more about laboratory-grade attempts to billow natural selection.
Also on the conspiracy theory vs. not, I think the trouble we're having is that the professional classes and media are handling the public poorly enough that it really kind of falls back on their own behavior - ie. if you don't want 'conspiracy theories' to proliferate don't condescend and lie to the public or at least have some very high quality vectors of information for the 10-20% of the public who deserves better than that. The story here is really one of careerism (the virology field not considering this story good for their career prospects) and avoiding damage to trade relationships with China. The ingredients fall pretty well within quite normal human incentive structures.

For many scientists, challenging the idea that SARS-CoV-2 has natural origins is seen as career suicide. But a vocal few say it shouldn't be disregarded or lumped in with conspiracy theories.

This generated a startling result: the spike proteins studding SARS-CoV-2 bound more tightly to their human cell receptor, a protein called ACE2, than target receptors on any other species evaluated. In other words, SARS-CoV-2 was surprisingly well adapted to its human prey, which is unusual for a newly emerging pathogen.

On Tuesday, the World Health Organization released a joint report with Beijing on the origins of the pandemic following a four-week investigation in China. It concluded, among other things, that the lab leak hypothesis was "extremely unlikely."
But WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said he does not believe the team's assessment of the lab leak possibility was extensive enough.
"Although the team has concluded that a laboratory leak is the least likely hypothesis, this requires further investigation, potentially with additional missions involving specialist experts, which I am ready to deploy," he told WHO members, according to a written statement.
Jamie Metzl, a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council, has been an outspoken proponent of such an investigation.
"I'm not saying that I am certain that COVID-19 stems from an accidental lab leak, but it would be absolutely irresponsible and could only be politically motivated to say that it's not even worth having a full investigation," he said.

Well, there's a difference between a virus that is created in a lab, and a virus that escapes from a lab. I don't see why the latter couldn't be plausible.
I liked the ‘Coronavirus’ name better, too.
"Coronavirus" is the name of the virus, "COVID-19" is the name of the disease that it causes (coronavirus disease-2019)
Just like how HIV and AIDS have kind of become synonymous.
"Corona" means "crown", BTW.
