Quote:
Three North Carolina Republican lawmakers introduced a bill Monday that would prevent doctors from performing gender reassignment surgery for transgender people younger than 21.

The legislation follows a nationwide trend of GOP-controlled state legislatures looking to limit treatments for transgender adolescents. Unlike other states, however, North Carolina would classify adults between the ages of 18 and 21 as minors under the “Youth Health Protection Act.”

Medical professionals who facilitate a transgender person’s desire to present themselves or appear in a way that is inconsistent with their biological sex could have their license revoked and face civil fines of up to $1,000 per occurrence. The measure bars doctors from providing gender confirming hormone treatment, puberty blockers or surgery.

Senate Bill 514 would also compel state employees to immediately notify parents in writing if their child displays “gender nonconformity” or expresses a desire to be treated in a way that is incompatible with the gender they were assigned at birth. LGBTQ advocates fear the bill would out people under 21 who tell state workers that they may be transgender.

In Arkansas on Monday, the state’s Republican governor, Asa Hutchinson, vetoed a bill that would have made his state the first in the nation to ban gender confirming treatments or surgery for transgender youth under 18.

The proposal in North Carolina will almost certainly not become law, despite GOP majorities in both the state House and Senate. Senate leader Phil Berger was not immediately available for comment on whether he supports the measure and wants it to go to Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper.

North Carolina Democrats last week unveiled a legislative package aimed at ensuring LGBTQ residents have greater legal protections. Among the plans put forward was a full repeal of House Bill 2, the state’s so-called “bathroom bill” that was passed in 2016 and partially repealed a year later. State lawmakers also pushed to prohibit gay conversion therapy practices. The bill introduced Monday by the three GOP senators would not allow the state or any licensing boards to punish people who provide therapy that is consistent with their conscience or religious beliefs.

The Arkansas legislature overrode Hutchinson's veto.

AR and NC are basically the Fourth Reich now.

In countries like Sweden, saying homosexuality is a sin is considered prosecutable hate speech, and are moving forward.

The southern U.S. is going back to the dark ages.

There is nothing controversial about this bill. After a person is 21 they can have any treatment they want, but an age limit needs to be set. A child can't make life altering decisions such as this.

So, a nanny state is necessary to protect people from themselves?

Are people 18+ legally considered children, though? Why not raise the legal age to overall be considered an adult to 21, then?

People can get plastic surgery, get tattoos, smoke cigarettes, go into debt for expensive items, etc. without their parents signing off on it at 18, and can legally make even more decisions that may permanently alter an aspect of their life.

If 18 year olds are so naive they can't choose to transition after taking the time to get multiple therapists and doctors to sign off on them doing those things, then why consider them adults at all? You can't say someone's an adult and then just not give them the bodily autonomy that an adult should have the right to.

It’s about nothing more than anti-LGBT bigotry, and trying to enforce the Evangelical Christian equivalent of Sharia law.

Maybe not for people who are happy with their sex, but I suspect people who are trapped in the wrong sex of body may find it controversial. Why should someone have to be 21 to get medical treatment?

Can we talk about the fact that this bill would require "state employees" to out adults to their parents? If someone's 18 and can live on their own they shouldn't have to worry about someone snitching on them to mommy and daddy, just because something about them seems "gender nonconforming".

Also, this is going to consider everyone 18 to 21 a minor regarding medical decisions. Not just trans people. Are we really comfortable with the possibility that the state government could add to this and prevent legal adults from having control of their medical choices?

Would you allow a 12 year old to get irreversible surgery or hormone therapy that would leave them scared for life? If an adult wants to fine. Children aren't able to make such decisions for themselves.

Minors don't get hormone therapy. At most, they get puberty blockers that can be easily reversed.

Apparently, you're enough of an adult at 17 to join the military, but you can't decide which gender you are. This is disgusting.

Can you show us any sources saying that children getting surgery and hormone replacement therapy is actually a common occurrence? I have never been shown any cases of this actually happening.

Minors aren't even allowed to have reassignment surgery until they hit 18, and I rarely hear of anyone getting hormone replacement therapy before the ages of 16-18. Even then, going on hormone therapy at 16 seems to be reserved for adolescents that have gone through extensive therapy for years and have presented as the gender they identify as for years.

The Deep South and flyover country are the only parts of the country where you don’t need a 6-figure income to afford a house.

How can those areas move forward when they think something as simple as wearing a face mask is “socialism”, and their only explanation for natural disasters is “God’s punishment for this or that”?

i see a similar mentality there as there is in large rural swaths of the middle-east - a fundamentalist philosophy that is quite brutal and lacking in nuance, quite hostile to the mere idea that anybody else could possibly know any better way to think and live and relate.
