Why do schools in the US want to teach sexual literature?

I came across this story by random but found it interesting how schools in the US or at least the ones mentioned in the program are teaching their kids some books dealing with kids or teens in sexual scenarios. They talk about it at 7:56 into the video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KfNMjIJmEQ&t=448s

But when the Mother reads portion of the books being taught in school she reads portions of the books dealing with kids, and oral sex scenarios.

But why do they want to teach these books in school? Is it a progressive political thing, and the progressive way of thinking is virginity is not cool, so we have to teach our kids about sex early on, so they will become sexually active and this become cool? Or what is the point of it?

Because, sometimes, sexual literature is good literature. And it’s not necessarily pornographic in a tacky sense.

This brings up the Censorship Question again....

I like good taste myself....progressives are not usually into decadence. I feel you should meet more progressives before making an assumption that progressives are into this sort of thing. Most are not.

But if it’s actually a depiction of young kids having sex, I feel like this shouldn’t be done. It’s wrong.

What was in the video, if it was actually presented in a classroom, shouldn’t be presented in the classroom. And most progressives would agree with me.

In all honesty, I want to hear about this from a reliable source, not from that smarmy crypto-fascist.

Oh well he showed footage from five people speaking up towards the school board about it in his footage. I don't think the footage was made up or doctored in anyway, and the footage seems to speak for itself.

I didn't watch the whole video. Did they name the books, the authors, or the age level of students?

Sure, but as kraftiekortie pointed out, those passages may have been taken from well written literature, which Carlson and much of his audience aren't going to respect or appreciate.
I recall a scene from the movie, Donnie Darko, where, during a PTA meeting, a very myopic teacher and mother is complaining about a book by Graham Greene for it's adult content. When Mrs. Darko asks her if she even knows who Graham Greene is, she answers: "I think we've all seen Bonanza."

I never got that joke as a kid. Graham Greene was never on Bonanza and I didn't know who Lorne Greene was.

That's actually the point of the joke. That narrow minded woman was displaying her ignorance in confusing actor Loren Green with author Graham Greene.

D.H Lawrence wrote tasteful works which represent great Modernist literature. It had sexual content in it. Probably should be assigned only to juniors and seniors in high school.

I read erotic literature when I was quite young, early teens. I didn’t become a pervert as a result.

Oh yes, I am not saying the literature itself is bad. It's just that parents are usually afraid of the idea of their kids having sex, so if parents are still like that, then why give the kids the ideas then? Why tell kids in school that "sometimes a girl needs a big c%$k" (as the book quote goes), if they do not want their kids to get ideas to have sex with?

Kids get “ideas,” anyway.

The “ideas” are what perpetuates our species.

But if kids get ideas anyway, then why do parents bother to restrict them from certain content? Why don't parents show their kids a movie like Last Tango in Paris at age 10, if they are just going to get the ideas anyway? Why was the movie Kids (1995) rated NC-17, if kids are just going to get the ideas anyway?

I'd still like to know the titles and authors of the books so I can assess them myself. It's quite possible the excerpts were taken out of context. How do the books end? Do these characters learn about sexual safety? Are there lessons to be learned about date rape and other important topics for teens? Do the books inspire critical thinking and debate?

Many books considered classical literature, for which these parents protest, contain scenes that would seem equally distasteful when taken out of context: Scarlett O'Hara shoots and kills a soldier, poor Mayella Ewell describes her rape by (black American) Tom Robinson in To Kill a Mockingbird and blames it on his race. In Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff threatens to beat Isabella Linton until her face turns purple. She is then kidnapped, held hostage, raped, and injured in a knife fight by this psycho, before fleeing the premises pregnant. Heathcliff then kidnaps his niece and forces her to marry his son, a boy the niece considers "an imbecile".

These are books of literature. They contain graphic material but also strong philosophical principles. They promote critical thinking by challenging the reader to think for themselves about morality, justice, and safety.

I'd like to know if the books on these school curricula do the same.

Please post a list of the titles if they're available.

Like I said previously, if you would bother to listen, I don’t support unfettered sexual exposure for young children....but I do support honest, scientific sex education.

I wouldn’t show “Last Tango in Paris” to a young child—for many reasons. But reading someone like Erica Jong wouldn’t pervert a child. I read her about age 12. It did me no harm.

I’m a rather conservative person in my sexual outlook. I’m not into all this role playing stuff or sadomasochism.

The arguments "in favor of" that I would have made have already been posted. That said: this is literature assigned by school, so I doubt any kid is going to enjoy homework, sexual or otherwise.
