In Florida, they are called sand flies. The are common out on the 10,000 Islands and on beaches in the Caribbean.

We have a few here, but not too many.

How long do the no see ums cause trouble in Arkansas? I don't recall having trouble with them when on the Buffalo River.

I have them all spring and early summer, till the rain slows down.I don’t think they breed well in cold running water. I have several ponds around me that stay full til mid summer.
Right now all the little creeks on either side of me are running and the Little Buffalo below me.They usually go dry in summer except for a few spring fed holes that hold water year round.Very cold water.

Are black flies a type of no-see-ums?

I can't stand black flies!! Here they're bad in some areas, until the first day of August.

We call those Buffalo gnats and they are the large ones.Sometimes they kill livestock.

We get chiggers and oak mites in my area. I appreciate the Internet, and that I can just put something in a search engine and get tons of information, I just looked up a bunch of stuff on tiny biting arthropods

I also appreciate my dog, and that he always loves a snuggle no matter what.
