I've been on an "American anime" kick lately. American made animated action series made for adults, idk if I'm just noticing them more or if more of them are being made now. I know some people will take issue with calling it anime but I think it fits, usually American animation is comedy and if it's action it's typically not aimed at adults. Castlevania feels like a seinen anime (with some over the top shounen style fighting in the latest season). I think Blood of Zeus actually opened with "an original Netflix anime series" or something. I hope this trend continues I'm really enjoying them.

I finished Castlevania, Invincible and Blood of Zeus. Dota: Dragon's Blood and Yasuke are next on my list. I highly recommend Castlevania and Invincible. Blood of Zeus was "okay". What are some other good ones? Old or new.

I'm not sure if you'd count it, but The Boondocks does a good job at incorporating some anime influences into a satirical cartoon.

I love the Boondocks, I think it fits more along the lines of how American animation tends to be comedy orientated, but the animation style is definitely anime influenced, especially during the action scenes.

I'm looking forward to the reboot. I hope it keeps the first three seasons canon. To Hell with season 4.

It also seems to be a bit more emotionally deep than most of the American satirical cartoons, although King of the Hill had already blazed that trail.

I still argue that "Avatar the Last Airbender" is one of the best animated series ever made

To All: What are your favorite animes?

You have piqued my curiosity.

Favorite anime? Get ready for a list.

My first anime shows were Sailor Moon, Pokemon, and Digimon. I still get a kick out of the old DiC dub of Sailor Moon, despite better options being available. This is a dub that made an openly lesbian couple into cousins to avoid the moral guardians but didn't do anything else to make them not LGBTQ+. Cluelessness or subtle middle finger towards the moral guardians? You decide. Pokemon's dub is meh, and Digimon's dub was better than many kids anime at the time but not great.

Special shout out to the craziness of Yu-Gi-Oh!'s Crazy premise, bad but fun dub, and the reason a random British dude got internet famous and started an internet content genre. I am of course referring to LittleKuriboh and the wonderfully crazy Yu-Gi-Oh! Abridged series.

Now time for the anime heavy-hitters. Cowboy Bebop is great, of course. A lot of manga serialized in Shonen Jump have good anime (Naruto and the like). But if you want to get into One Piece, be prepared to sink every waking moment into trying to catch up because that sucker is looooooong. I'm not even bothering with it.

Of all the anime out there I can definitely say that Fullmetal Alchemist is my favorite overall. Do I mean the first anime or the more manga faithful Brotherhood? Yes. Yes to both.

When it comes to anime movies, you really can't go wrong with Studio Ghibli's canon. Though I've yet to watch Grave of the Fireflies, and will probably only ever watch it once in my life. It's that depressing.

Now, I haven't been watching much anime that's come out in the last decade. The last one I really got into was Puella Magi Madoka Magica, which has such twists and turns that by the end you're gonna get whiplash of the "that was amazing" variety.

Finally, if you want a series that is uber lighthearted, full of pretty boys, and may sorta teach you history, Hetalia: Axis Powers might fit the bill. And trust me, it focuses much more on the pretty boys being goofballs than anything remotely Godwiny.

Akira's great.
I like a lot of Studio Ghibli's work.
Berzerk is really good, although it has moments that seem edgy for edginess sake.
Capeta is good if you like go-kart racing.
Initial D is probably my all-time favourite.
Wangan Midnight is good if you're still not tired of racing.

Hmm... interesting... all good ideas...

I am specifically into "hard" science-fiction -- the kind with only a couple of "gimmicks" like FTL travel, gravity control, and intelligent aliens; but leaving out "magic" (i.e., tech-mages, psionics, forgotten "gods" returning to life, et cetera).  This leaves out things like Star Trek and Star Wars, but can include things like Stargate: SG1, Firefly/Serenity, and Space: Above & Beyond.  Look up the Traveller RPG in any of its many forms to understand.

More generally, I am into: Action, Adventure, Historical, Medical, Mystery, School Life, Sci-fi, and Slice of Life.

I am NOT into: Adult, Bishonen, Boys Love, Comedy, Cooking, Doujinshi, Drama, Ecchi, Fantasy, Gender-Bender, Girls love, Gossip, Harem, Hentai, Horror, Isekai, Josei, Martial Arts, Mecha, Porn, Psychological, Relationships/Romance, Seinen, Shoujo, Shounen, Smut, Sports, Supernatural, Thriller, Tragedy, Yaoi, or Yuri.

Aren't those three basically 'primary fanbase demographic' based genres? I'm pretty sure hard sci-fi would likely end up classed as seinen since it's unlikely to be aimed at younger males (shonen) or it's less likely to be aimed towards women or girls (josei or shojo).

Unless you're after josei focused on hard sci-fi themes?

That would generally be categorized as men's. I was trying to explain that seinen = men's.

Yeah, I really enjoyed castlevania. And the boondocks is awesome. I obviously love avatar the last air bender because I named my dog Appa after the fluffiest flying bison(my dog is also super fluffy and huge :D ). And i heard there might be some new venture brothers which is exciting.

If you like Sci-fi you can always check out something like:
steins gate which is about the pursuit of time travel.
Psychopass which feels like something Philip k dick would have written.
ID: Invaded also Philip k dick feel. About entering the mind of a killer to track them down. So it's a mystery too.
Gintama is one of my favorites. It's got space travel, samurai, adventure, satire etc. Aliens invade edo Japan to set up essentially a space station hub. The main female character is a descendant of intergalactic bounty hunters, she's hilarious and awesome.

Medical/science:
Cells at work it's awesome. My degree is in microbiology so I really enjoyed this show. I love how the killer T cells are like marines. Lol
Moyashimon is about a kid who can see microbes with naked eye, no microscope. He goes to a natural science college. A lot of the show is about the process of making sake, cheese etc. It's funny but the science is good.

Slice of life: I could go on for pages of this genre but I won't :D
Laid back camp is about a girl who loves solo winter camping. It's really relaxing.
aria the animation is Sci-fi too. Humans inhabited another planet Aqua. The main character moved to aqua to become an undine (gondola driver). The planet is covered in water so all the cities look like Venice Italy.
Hozuki's coolheadedness is about the chief staff of Japanese hell. It's hilarious and relaxing. The way hell is run like a company cracks me up. The demons torturing people is just a day job. I recommended this to a lot of people who were very reluctant to watch but after a few episodes I got texts they were all addicted. I'm not sure what it is about this show but it's awesome in my humble opinion.

I also like to add One piece even though its technically Shonen. But the spirit of the show is adventure. Luffy heals my soul.

I've seen a few good mystery animes too but can't think of em at the moment. Oh maybe Ranpo Kitan: game of lepace. It's based on Ranpo Edogowas novels. Some of the murders are rather disturbing but it's pretty decent.
onihei it's historical and mystery. I really enjoyed this show.

I do have a question though, when you say you don't like martial arts genre does that exclude samurai. There's a lot of good adventure/action ones with samurai.

Of course. After all our wonderful Dai Li agents are the cultural protectors of Avatar the Last Airbender and are here to ensure everything is going fine and no corruption from an awful live action remake
