Morrison is ‘very much aligning himself’ with President Biden’s foreign policy agenda
09/06/2021|4min

Melbourne University Professor Michael Wesley says the prime minister is “aligning himself” with Joe Biden’s foreign policy agenda by insisting liberal democracies need to cooperate more intensively than they have in three decades.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison made the comments during a major foreign policy speech ahead of his trip to the United Kingdom for the G7+ talks with other world leaders.

Mr Morrison said “an active cooperation among like-minded countries and Liberal democracies, not seen for 30 years” was required to maximise regional and global stability.

“This is the new agenda isn’t it, it’s very much speaking to Joe Biden’s agenda,” Professor Wesley
told Sky News.

“You’ll remember in Joe Biden’s presidential campaign he made a number of really kind of keynote speeches around his foreign policy approach and he was calling very much on a coalition of democracies.

“He said that he would bring together a coalition of democracies early in his presidency, so it looks like the prime minister’s picked up on that language and is very much aligning himself with President Biden”.

Professor Wesley said it was very interesting to see the extension partners which had been invited to the G7 summit were all democracies and pointed out it was important to also have allies among non-democratic countries.

Liberal democracies must buttress a ‘global order’ which favours freedom: PM Morrison
09/06/2021|5min

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has urged Liberal democracies around the world to reinforce a “global order” which favours freedom as the Indo-Pacific region faces heightened competition.

The prime minister’s comments come ahead of the G7+ summit, to be held in Cornwall.

“As we meet together in Cornwall, our patterns of cooperation within the Liberal rules-based order that have benefited us for so long, we know they are under renewed strain,” he said.

“And as leaders of some of the world 's largest Liberal democracies and advanced economies, we must tend to the gardening with renewed clarity, unity and purpose, our challenge is nothing less than to reinforce, renovate and buttress a world order that favours freedom.”

Mr Morrison said the COVID-19 pandemic “merely underlines” the urgent need to deepen and accelerate shared endeavours.

“Our interests are inextricably linked to an open, inclusive and resilient Indo-Pacific region, that is our interest,” he said.

“I want to be clear about what we are seeking to do, but I also want to be clear about what we are not seeking to do. This is not about drawing, as we gather in Cornwall, a closed circle around a particular club.

“It’s about ensuring we maintain an open, rules-based global system that supports peace, prosperity and aspirations for all, all sovereign nations.”

According to Prime Minister Morrison, we are faced with “heightened competition” in the Indo-Pacific region and the task is “to manage that competition”.

“Competition does not have to lead to conflict, nor does competition justify coercion,” he said.

“We need all nations to participate in the global system, in ways that foster development and cooperation.

“Australia stands ready to engage in dialogue with all countries, on shared challenges, including China, when they are ready to do so with us.”

Prime Minister Scott Morrison is 'building a coalition' against China
10/06/2021|5min

Prime Minister Scott Morrison is “building a coalition” to take on China at the G7 with Japan already backing Australia, according to Perth USAsia Centre Research Director Jeffrey Wilson.

“For the last 12 months, Australia’s laboured in a bilateral trade dispute with China on our own and the size differential means a country like Australia is never going to prevail in that,” he told Sky News.

Mr Wilson said the fact Japan has already decided to support Australia against China shows the “agenda is gathering steam” and the strategy Mr Morrison is using is working.

“The strategy the prime minister is taking today at the G7 is actually one of building a coalition, getting other countries to come together as a force multiplier for what Australia’s trying to do.”

Japan shows it’s a ‘strong ally’ of Australia by supporting pushback against China
10/06/2021|4min

Sky News Business Editor Ross Greenwood says Japan is showing it is a “strong ally” of Australia by supporting pushback against China, particularly for it’s bans on Australian goods.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has always said China’s bans on Australian goods should be adjudicated within the World Trade Organisation and will have the chance to make his case at the G7 summit, according to Mr Greenwood.

“He’s certainly assisted and aided in this by not only the United States … but also by Japan, again giving assistance to Australia and saying … there’s got to be pushback against China, against its taking over of islands and parts of the South China Sea,” he said.

“But also, when it comes to dealing with trade with Australia.

“Japan, by doing this, clearly again is showing itself to be a strong ally of Australia right now and this is key if Australia is to get itself back on track with China … in terms of trade”.

G7 summit: A tale of 'liberal democracies' versus 'autocracies'
14/06/2021|6min

Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says the G7 theme was summed up in the words of US President Joe Biden – who spoke of a "contest" between liberal democracies and autocracies.

President Biden's remarks came after he was quizzed about what to do in particular with Russia and China.

"I think we're in a contest, not with China per se, but a contest with autocrats – autocratic governments around the world," President Biden said.

"As to whether or not democracies can compete with them in the rapidly changing 21st century.

"I think how we act and whether we pull together as democracies is going to determine whether our grandkids look back 15 years from now and say did they step up."

Mr Clennell also said Prime Minister Scott Morrison would feel "completely vindicated" over his stance on China as there's "no doubt" the UK, US and Australia are all on the same page that China has "behaved badly" and must be stood up to.

"I think that Scott Morrison will feel completely vindicated by what's occurred here both in the G7 communique and the statement out of the summit," Mr Clennell said.

"There's a belief that China, from these three countries, China has behaved badly and that you have to stand up to bullies, that's the belief, and that's the tactic they've gone for so I think Morrison will be quite happy with that."

G7 summit may mark a ‘major reset’ of western alliances
14/06/2021|5min

The G7 summit may mark a “major reset” of the western alliances since other world leaders have welcomed the fact US President Joe Biden is “a member of the club”, according to Sky News contributor Michael Ware.

“This is potentially a significant reset of the alliance of leading liberal democracies in the world,” he said.

“Certainly, in terms of America as President Biden put it — America is back.

“That’s certainly been welcomed.

“The British Prime Minister Boris Johnson says President Biden is a breath of fresh air.

"The French President Emmanuel Macron says that it’s great to have a US president who’s a member of the club and is very eager to cooperate.

"And Angela Merkel says that President Biden’s election now means that the world can start looking for solutions to its problems with much more zest."

Macron shows support for Australia’s leadership in the Indo-Pacific
16/06/2021|5min

French President Emmanuel Macron issued a message of strong support for Australia’s leadership in the Indo-Pacific region when he met with Prime Minister Scott Morrison in Paris on Tuesday.

President Macron told Prime Minister Morrison he understood Australia was “at the forefront of the tensions in the region” and said he wanted to reiterate “how much we stand by your side”.

“Scott Morrison, what a day he’s had,” Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell said.

“He started the day at number 10 Downing Street, ended up at Windsor Castle with the Queen, and finished the day with dinner at the Elysee Palace with the French President Emmanuel Macron".

Mr Clennell said Mr Macron has become the “third world leader on this short trip to back Australia’s stance over China”.

Morrison had 'strong support' on China from G7 leaders
20/06/2021|3min

Scott Morrison had a "strong show of support" out of the G7 against economic coercion and aggressive statements by China, so much so they were serving Australian Shiraz at Carbis Bay, says Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell.

"Getting the G7 and US and UK and France on board was not difficult and they were even more onboard when the PM tabled the list of 14 grievances the Chinese Embassy in Australia had given a Channel 9 reporter last year," said Mr Clennell.

"Emmanuel Macron went back to his cabinet and said the list was ridiculous.

"That list covering everything from Huawei to speaking up for an independent inquiry into COVID and it came at the time last year that Australia signed a defence pact with Japan."
