The bulk of the people I've met through collecting hobbies are conservatives.

The bill also passed in the House of Representatives. I can't imagine Biden not signing it.

Despite my reservations in the OP, I do see how this recognition will change the understanding of race in America. We have yet to heal from our "original sin" as a country.

The healing will never be complete until October 12 is re-designated as a National Day of Mourning.

The Republican who signed the Emancipation Proclamation has been dead for over 150 years.

The currently-living Republicans want to limit voting rights to only white people and the Electoral College.

"Yeah-- we Democrats did a little 'whoopsie' with that whole slavery thing, but the Republicans corrected it. Thanks, Republicans!"

During this year's Juneteenth, the nation will gather to celebrate the American political party that was founded on protecting human rights of people of all skin colors. Democrats around the country will write letters of apology and organize celebrations for the vast network of Christians, Catholics, Quakers, and Republicans who fought and died to end the scourge of slavery in America.

Congress has also approved the building of a giant elephant statue in D.C. to honor the party responsible for the freeing of slaves from Democrat plantations.

Biden has confirmed he will organize a celebration at the White House after he lays a wreath on the grave of his best friend Robert Byrd.

Hilarious, you'll have to excuse me as I don't rely on right wing rags for information (or humour for that matter).

I assume you are familiar with the concept of history and how the republican party of Lincoln has no resemblance to the current group of jokers who claim to be republican.

The Babylon Bee is a satirical paper, similar to the Onion.

You might have to explain to them the meaning of the word "Satirical".

I hang with conservative GOPers, both northern GOPers, and White southern GOP adult children of Dixiecrat parents (folks who would have been Southern Dems a generation ago who are now GOP).

Some, sadly, DO fit the stereotypes. Like my crazy buddy (of the latter category) who once said "I am not happy unless I see a n****r on TV every five seconds" in response to the slow but steady growth in the number of Black faces on TV.

But he IS rather crazy.

Actually, it's more likely that those who rely on the New York Times for "news" who would need that explanation:
Quote:
Following the publication of the March 19 article, titled, “For Political Cartoonists, the Irony Was That Facebook Didn’t Recognize Irony,” the Babylon Bee sent the New York Times a demand letter accusing the paper of record of defamation.

This weekend, nearly three months after the fact, the conservative group got a response from the New York Times’s senior counsel.

“We have carefully reviewed the the [sic] concerns raised in your letter and, in response to those concerns, we have removed the reference to the Babylon Bee from the article and appended a correction,” attorney Dana Green said.

Quote:
Adding to the shoddiness of the reporting is the fact that, in alleging that the Babylon Bee is a depository of far-right misinformation, the March 19 article includes a hyperlink to an Oct. 11 New York Times report recognizing the group as a legitimate satire website.

New York Times editors apparently don’t read the New York Times.

Also, the irony of the paper of record publishing an outright, since-detracted falsehood in an article warning of the dangers of online falsehoods can't be missed. It's a joke worthy of a professional satire site.

The Republicans I work and worship with all seem like nice, normal, rational people until a discussion veers toward topics like the right to own firearms, civil rights, reproductive rights, subsidized medical care, universal basic income, and whether or not the 2020 presidential election was stolen.  About a dozen Republicans left our church because our pastoral staff refused to pray openly that Mr. Trump would be reinstated to the presidency.  To those Republicans, UBI, reproductive rights, civil rights, and subsidized medical care are Socialism and should be abolished.

And do not even suggest to them that they might want to register their AR-15s and other assault weapons, unless you want to start a fist-fight.

Lots of truth to it all the same. Our politicians from both parties pat themselves on the backs for creating a new holiday while tens of thousands of African American children are forced to attend failing, segregated schools in violent neighborhoods where none receive a proper education. They do nothing about it and many even fight to keep it that way.

Like I implied ... some people can not (or will not?) discern the difference between truth and satire.

Of course they fight to keep it that way: While politicians can point at a "problem", they can use it to gather supporters\voters for their cause\fundraising\etc. - If they really cared about the issue, they would fix the problem, but that would result in the loss of everything the existance of the "problem" gives them, and require them to actually do something other than talk.

Well of course!

SOME body has to adopt Republican values-- now that the GOP has abandoned its own values.
So why not the Democrats?

And I dont mean just important stuff like free trade, and a balanced budget. The GOP has also turned against little things called "Democracy", and "the Constitution" and try to steal elections.

Some deflect and make jokes in an odd attempt to justify a racist, segregated system while calling others racists. It's disgusting.

Cancel culture is a problem, but firearms registration dems fightin' words and I'm entitled to cancel your opinion by punching you in the mouth.

Would that be the mindset, roughly? :nerdy:
