I am autistic and remember being alone. I did not like its intensity. I am getting married and now have many friends. This post is not about me. My future wife has a 20 year old son that is autistic and very intelligent. He has no friends and spends 24/7 locked in his room except for the times he comes down to talk to me. He likes me a lot! I remember not liking isolation but I have been told to let him be by wrong planet members. I would never force him to do anything but I detect "cabin fever" in him. HE IS NOT HAPPY! Anyway, I have 2 questions. 1. His mother is very nice to him and yet he avoids her intensely. Why? 2. How can I improve his social life. I do not even have any options for friendships to offer him! I like being his best friend but people need more friends than just their parents!

Would building a model railway from a trainset in another room be something that you can all enjoy and will encourage him to branch out a bit? It is just a thought.

Mensa, if he's eligible; WP, he's eligible; community college class of his choice; find him a part-time job or volunteer opportunity that might interest him; if he's good with his hands, have him repair something or do some kind of kit.

I’m in a very similar situation to your stepson, so I can really empathize with his situation. Most major cities have one or more autistic social groups nowadays, which can be found by a quick web search.

If you live in or near the District of Columbia, I know of a couple groups I could point you and him toward.
