Not an obscure movie but I enjoyed watching The Incredible Hulk
that starred Edward Norton as Bruce Banner.

Best movie no one has ever heard of?

How about the sequel to Jaws whith the elderly shark.
They named the film "Gums".

I don't suppose it is the same Ed Norton as in this SciFi Movie?

What about Caper Films?

Has anyone ever seen "The Lavender Hill Mob" with Sir Alec Guinness?

Or Fantasy films set in modern times

Bernard and the Genie (1991) (featuring Rowan Atkinson) was a fun film

Or Adventure?

The Sea Hawk (1940) was a great film and I have never heard it talked about.

Scaramouche (1952) was another

My favorite genre is Science Fiction but, in general, the best Science Fiction movies are relatively well known (aren't they?). Except maybe some films from the 1950s? Probably most folk who are willing to watch 1950s Sci-Fi know about The Day the Earth Stood Still [1951], Forbidden Planet [1958], On the Beach [1959], Them! [1954], and The War of the Worlds [1953].

Notes:
-- There is also a made-for-TV remake: On the Beach [2000]. It is essentially the same story. Both versions are excellent!
-- Beware which mastering of The War of the Worlds [1953] you watch or buy. In some of the remastered prints you can see the special effects' mechanisms. (This was traumatic for me! How could they ruin a masterpiece like that!!) The remastering from The Criterion Collection is beautiful, however, and is definitely the one you want to watch.

Our DVD of this includes both the American and British version of the film. I prefer the American version.

In most respects this is actually not a very good movie--even for 1950s Sci-Fi. But I think it is a remarkable film for how ahead of its time it was. It managed to "see" quite a few things from the future!

speaking of gums, there was a movie in 2007 called "Teeth."

I had never heard of "On the Beach" before - the trailer doesn't look like most SiFi I know.


The cast certainly looks interesting! I would also like to watch Gigot with "The Great One", another of your picks.

Another Caper film I really liked was Sneakers (1992) good cast - fun film - seems to be mostly forgotten now.

I was watching this clip and my 11 year old looks over my shoulder and says "hey isn't that what Marty McFly was watching?"

Not really "the best film" but worth a mention -
Old Sci Fi time travel film with a plot kind of like Terminator 2 (I remembered seeing this on tv a long time ago)
Cyborg 2087 (1966) - the "2087" part is in the title - "1966" is the actual year the film was made.

I hope you enjoy On the Beach, either the [1959] or [2000] version. Both versions are excellent though I agree the 1959 film has a stellar cast. Note that they are dramas in Sci-Fi situations; they do not have a lot of fancy special effects or any abundance of the usual trappings of a block-buster Sci-Fi film. I think our collection might include a few other films like that but On the Beach and The World, the Flesh, and the Devil stand out, I think.

And, while I admit Gigot is a very good film I'm going to note my bride picked it. It's kind of nice when she chooses a movie I would've avoided...but then I discover I like it.

Wow. I remember seeing this on TV decades ago. It's really about Gleason, a tormented individual whose talents were never appreciated, I suppose because producers didn't want to work with him.

seems the most creative people almost always are hell on wheels.

It had to do with an early female astronaut preparing for a mission to the moon. I thought it was historic/factual.

Has anyone here heard of Summer Wars? A really entertaining choice for summer viewing. Summer vacay is so damn short in Japan.
