Mark Grenon jolted awake in a sweat, his heart pounding.  He had been shaken by a nightmare that his family was about to be captured by armed forces who wanted to put him behind bars for life.

In a rare feat for a false prophet, Grenon's vision essentially came true.  At the break of dawn the next morning, July 8, 2020, as police helicopters circled overhead, a SWAT team appeared in armored vehicles and raided the headquarters of the Genesis II Church of Health and Healing in Bradenton, Florida, which doubled as the family home.  Two of Grenon’s sons, Jordan and Jonathan, were arrested...

In South America, a toxic chemical is being touted as a miracle cure for Covid-19.  How did the mistaken belief in its powers take hold?

The flyer had thousands of shares on Facebook.  It requested people to do something that, amid a pandemic, sounded outrageous: go to a square and protest elbow-to-elbow with a bunch of strangers.  Yet, dozens of residents of Lima, the capital of Peru, left their homes the morning of 28 July 2020, and met in one of the city’s biggest parks to do just that.  In their minds, they were not only not risking their own lives, but saving the lives of many others.

The protest was organized by an organization called Comusav, a Spanish acronym for "Global Coalition for Health and Life".  They said they were defending their rights to life and health, but their true cause was demanding their government accept a toxic chemical as a treatment for Covid-19.

Chlorine dioxide, the apparent cure they were clamoring for, is not only ineffective against Covid-19, but it can cause life-threatening dehydration and acute liver failure.  It is considered hazardous for human consumption by health authorities all over the world, including those in Peru.  Its promoters have had face-offs with doctors and have even been prosecuted by authorities for years, but the coronavirus pandemic gave them their biggest showcase so far.

Chlorine dioxide was not the only fake cure to gain popularity as the world scrambled for ways to combat the pandemic.  Other substances, like hydroxychloroquine, ivermectin, or azithromycin were also touted as possible ways to prevent getting the virus or suffering its worst effects.  None of them showed any conclusive results against Covid-19.

Their trial is going on now:
Florida family accused of selling fake COVID-19 cure through online church goes on trial in Miami

Quote:
MIAMI (AP) — A Florida family accused of selling a toxic industrial bleach as a fake COVID-19 cure through their online church is on trial this week in Miami.

Mark Grenon, 65, and his sons, 37-year-old Jonathan, 35-year-old Joseph and 29-year-old Jordan, are all charged with conspiring to defraud the United States and deliver misbranded drugs, according to court records.

The Grenons are representing themselves but declined to make opening statements as the trial began Monday, the Miami Herald reported. They have pleaded not guilty.

Prosecutors called the Grenons “con men” and “snake-oil salesmen” and said the Bradenton family’s Genesis II Church of Health and Healing sold $1 million worth of their so-called Miracle Mineral Solution. In videos, it was pitched as a purported cure for 95% of known diseases, including COVID-19, Alzheimer’s, autism, brain cancer, HIV/AIDS and multiple sclerosis, prosecutors said.

What the Grenons were selling was actually chlorine dioxide, officials said. When ingested, the solution becomes a bleach that is typically used for such things as treating textiles, industrial water, pulp and paper, according to the Food and Drug Administration. Authorities said it is the same as drinking bleach and can be fatal.

A Miami federal judge ordered the church to stop selling the substance in 2020, but that was ignored.

Jonathan and Jordan Grenon were arrested in Bradenton, just south of the Tampa Bay area. Mark and Joseph Grenon fled to Colombia, where they were arrested and extradited back to the U.S.

I gather that this is the same very toxic "Miracle Mineral Solution" (bleach) that became a fad for a while for parents to give to their autistic children, in the form of enemas?

Yes it is the same MMS fake medicine.

It has quite a history:

Wikipedia: Miracle Mineral Supplement

Here's how Trump got this bad idea: Australian arm of group that wrote to Trump peddling bleach as coronavirus cure fined $150,000
