I've accidentally moved a couple of files on my USB drive. How do I find which ones they are , and restore them to their original folder?

Are you able to search by "Most Recent" or "Date Added" ?

^ I can't see any way of doing so.

I'm on Mac. If I open a folder on my desktop I see this menu, above all the files.
I can click "Date Modified" to put the files in chronological or reverse chronological order.

I went in Finder and used that dropdown with all the little squares.

Sorry I'm no expert and I don't know the proper vocabulary, but that's what I would do.

you just have to to go through each file and read it. When you find the one/ones you want you can THEN rename it/them a new name that makes sense to you so you find them the next time. And maybe put those files into a logically named folder.

Thanks all of you. I've gone through my folders, and can find no indication of any recently moved file.

When you add/remove files to/from a folder, date modified of this folder is updated. I don't have windows machine here, but FWIK you should be able to use search in root folder of your USB drive in file explorer to limit search results to type: Folder and sort by: date modified. Couple most recently modified folders supposed to the ones to/from files were moved.

Can see no way of doing that.

What is your windows version?
If I would have a windows machine with the same version of Windows as yours, I would guide you step-by-step, but I don't.

If I remember correctly, at least in Windows 10 there supposed to be a search field at the top of files explorer window with magnifying glass symbol. You can type something like "kind:folder" or "kind:folders" and select to search only your USB drive from dropdown to the left, then sort results by "date modified". You might need to enable some option in system settings for this syntax to work.

I'm very unfamiliar with Windows but I'll try asking a few people who might know it.

If you know what type of file you're looking for .DOC, .JPG., .XLS (<<-- Excel, whatever it's called), you can go into the search bar of the USB and just type ".DOC" or the the extension type. It should at least bring up all the files of that "type" and then it might give you a drop down or another way to sort the results by date modified?

The problem is I have no idea what file type it was. What you say does make sense.

You should search not files, but recently modified folders. When you move a file into a folder, "date modified" field of this folder is updated.

Wait until indexing is complete.

Open top level folder of your USB drive in File Explorer.

In search field with magnifying glass icon at the top right of the window type: "kind:folders"

Then sort search results by "date modified"

Most recently modified folders should be the folders to which or from which any files where recently moved or deleted.
