I’m almost 20 and I still continue to be treated that way

I aways thought it was my autism holding me back, but no. It’s my parents and the system

Does anyone else feel this way?

I was often treated as a far younger child by my mom while I was growing up, who then turned around and chewed me out for failing to reach milestones on time.

How do people treat (people who they think are) idiots?

I'm surprised you have memories going back to birth. Most of us can't remember events earlier than about 2 or 3 years old.

Or am I being overly literal?

Some of my relatives treat me like I was still a socially awkward and physically clumsy kid.

I do not speak to those relatives very much any more.

I see this is your first post. Welcome to WP! Feel free to tell us a bit more about how your parents make you feel that way, as well as what it is about the "system" so members can perhaps relate a bit better and offer more specific advice or input.

It's common for people with autism to be treated like the village idiot sadly. Usually I distance myself from them.

Sure.
I kinda relate to some respects.
Because I have enough pride about how I see myself, contrary with how it is expressed outwardly.

But the issue I have that has little to do with others, but more to do with my own issues around lack of control and internal regulation to express so.

Yet I won't mind for pragmatic reasons. I'll take and work with what I get.

The assumptions around me will make people more predictable.
In fact if someone assumes about me, I'll use that assumption against them.

To be beneath notice at some aspects, and not so with another.
If push comes to shove, I will make them regret it...

Better if they won't know it's me because of those assumptions dismisses me.

The real reason why it redeems in my book was because I like surprising people. :P

My bigoted uncles treat me and my NT sister like crap whenever they visit. :x

They both believe the spectrum isn't real, that the only way for a man (spectrum and NT alike) to truly man up is to enlist in the armed forces and that the only way for a woman to be happy is to settle down before doing anything else.

BTW, welcome to Wrong Planet! :)

The people in my family have always held me back from doing things and have treated me like I am stupid. If I do something that shows them I am the opposite of stupid they get angry and take it as a personal attack. :|

I've felt like this growing up as well in a wholeheartedly manner and it made me feel horrible; so, I can relate to this post of yours.
