We bought a new apartament.
300m from the old one, a bit lower standard but significantly bigger.
I believe it's the right moment to move as we could afford it and our daughters would benefit from separate rooms. I hope we can move in before the next covid wave, expected around October-November - we want to make some adjustments to make it more claustrophobia-friendly and to set up a workshop for my husband (Yay, no more aluminium shavings all over the bedroom :D )

It feels strange. So adult.

Congratulations! Since the kids get their own rooms, I'm guessing it's at least three bedrooms? Is your husband's workshop going to be a room in the apartment or does he have space rented out somewhere?

And good luck with the move itself; moving can be pretty tiresome.

Wonderful - it's always nice to have a bit more space and I'm sure you'll be very happy there, although the actual move might be a less pleasant aspect. Unpacking is more fun, and finding new spaces to put things.

Three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a spacious closet, big kitchen with dining space and enormous living room that we're going to divide into a smaller living room and my husband's workshop.
That's quite a lot of space for urban standards :)
I'm hoping the place will be ready before October, in case of more lockdowns. Surviving in two bedrooms with remote work and remote schooling required skills of a submarine captain ;)

I don't think the lockdowns here would prevent people from moving house - exceptions were made here under level 4for moving house as far as I recall. The current level is 3. But I think all such activities had to be shelved for five weeks last year April/May with alert level 5. That was oppressive as you could only go shopping. I slipped out once for a bit of a cross country walk and once to see my sister.

I hope it will be ready ASAP for you. I can imagine it must currently require contortion skills.

No, it's not so much about preventing moving - it's about needing more space in case of another lockdown and remote schooling.
The girls having remote classes next to each other was a problematic situation - they distracted each other and each other's classes a lot.

That’s a pretty darn decent apartment even for the US. Congratulations.

Not many apartments have 2 bathrooms in NYC.

My sister does home schooling for her two eldest so I fully understand! Her life is somewhat more hectic than think I could cope with... but women are usually very capable multitaskers.

You have no idea how I suffer from this expectation

Two bathrooms per apartament got increasingly popular here since 1990s. Even our current two bedroom place has them.
It may be because apartaments from the communist times often had a bathroom separate from toilet - and many people decided to add a shower to the toilet room and a toilet to the bathroom, which reduces family queues in the mornings ;)

To make such space affordable for regular people like us, the new place is 4th and 5th floor without elevator. A bit of cardio every day ;)

At least you know you'll never be stuck in an elevator in the ups and downs of daily life.

That means you have a duplex :)

Especially with food shopping and such, going up 4-5 flights of stairs is difficult.

Backpacks are a very useful invention.
