A solution in Australia is group homes where people on the spectrum who struggle with independence live with other people on the spectrum or other special needs which is managed by a live-in carer. The model allows for semi-independent living and some autonomy and costs are much lower than traditional institutions which are more like prisons.

The downside is group-homes only work for people who have some ability to be functional/independent, But this might still alleviate the pressure for parents, costs for government and be better for the clients.

The main roadblock against smaller group homes in nice neighborhoods is NIMBY which is shorthand for "Not In My Backyard".

People do not want "those people" living next to them "lowering property values", "menacing their children". Suburban politicians know that if they do not oppose "those people" moving in they will be voted out of office.

Yet another reason why we NEED a much better-organized autistic rights movement than we now have, in alliance with the housing rights movement as well as the disability right movement -- to act, in this case, as a political counterweight against the forces of organized real estate greed.

As I've said elsewhere:

Jesus said: "For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil."

In today's world that would be, more specifically: "For the love of property values is the root of all kinds of evil."

Yes true they love their house price inflation in fact it’s a western addiction that goes to the heart of many things nearly all bad.
