Lately I've been thinking about how long I've actually been dealing with depression in my (relatively short) life, and I realized that I've probably been consistently depressed since I was 11 or 12 years old, but that I can remember occasionally feeling depressed as far back as 7 years old. It didn't click until now that it's possible for kids to legitimately feel depressed and that was probably what I was feeling.

I'm now curious about when people who deal with depression think they first started experiencing that, and if they can identify any examples of depression in their childhood?

Low mood "for no reason" and "melancholic personality" - as far as I can remember. Certainly from early school age.
Crippling problems that screwed my functioning beyond my coping abilities - first time from 17 to 19.

Probably at 8. Because before that time, it's mostly confusion.
And reacted really violently in realization.

I just don't understand back then. Maybe out of pure dissonance.
It just changed into something more tired around 15.

When I was 14. I was failing all my subjects in school, had no friends and had to see the school psychologist. I remember feeling pretty low at that time.

First major episode like couple months after I got my first computer at about 12 and was spending nights and days doing "what makes you happy".

I used to get really "moody" and angry when I was 7, because I was depressed and didn't know what was going on or how to handle it. When I got older it definitely became a more "tired" and "sad/numb" type of depression.

About 5 or 6.  For an entire summer, I could not enjoy anything, and I did not know why.

Probably had some symptoms when I was 14. I'd say it was definitely an illness by the time I was 16.
