It depends.

Some girls only take close up selfies that makes them look attractive, but when you see them in real life, they're actually obese. So in that case, they definitely look better in their photos.

On the other hand, a lot of guys look terrible with selfie photos. There's something about taking up close photos that tends to make masculine facial features look bad; that's one reason why selfies make men look bad usually. That's why men SHOUDN'T be taking selfies.

BUT if you take a good quality photo with a full body shot, then it's a lot easier to discern the attractiveness of someone.

I actually feel like Goldie Hawn is more "cute" than "pretty" or "beautiful."

That picture must have been taken about 1965 or so.

I wonder how she would have looked had she been frowning....

These are just personal preferences then. I'm sure that obesity does not necessarily = a decrease in attractiveness .

I'm not sure I understand what you mean about men taking selfies? Selfies look kinda weird to me, no matter who takes them.

Posed photos can be edited to no end. For example, 99.9% of the photos in fashion magazines have some kind of photoshopping done to them. That's just the post-processing. Even "on-site" factors like light and camera lens settings matter more than the subject him/herself.

A bad photo might just be down to bad lighting, an unflattering angle, or unnatural focal length.

IMO you need at least a dozen photos of a person to give a rough idea of what that person looks like in reality. But the only way really is to meet them.

It's 100%

I used to work in the industry (on the editing side, not the modeling side)

I'm not a model. On most photos for documents, I look like a drug addict. Only very good photographers are capable of catching "the thing" about me.

Is "Heroin chic" still in vogue?
Post a pick.

I have had good pictures and mug shot looking pictures on my driver's licence.

It was probably me. I am disgustingly heterosexual, which in today's world might actually make me a pervert.

I've never posted a current picture of myself, but here's a blurry one of me around 1978 I posted a few years back:

It would be interesting to see what some of us looked like when we were younger (hint! hint!).

This is me.

I wanted people to luv me for who I am.
The intellectually gifted, satirically blessed, incorrigibly ironic, insanely insightful, outrageously rational, humorously hilarious, irresistibly luvable stinky scamp that I am.

I am not just a pretty face. 8)

You look like a better version of the Son of Sam, Max.

In 1978, I had long hair and pimples.

I'm older than you. I had pimples when I was 20. By the time I was 25 (when that photo was taken), they had cleared up.
