I used to watch a lot of documentaries on people living off the grid and have played around with some concepts like aquaculture, community gardens, solar power etc. it's just too much effort and you have to invest your time 24-7 to look after the venture which is impossible to work to pay for all the expensive toys
- outdoor tanks for fish
- filtration systems
- property with licence to hold animals and fish
- rainwater water storage
- house pre-built for purpose
- septic tank set up to a recycling unit to capture waste water to create fertiliser and recycle water
- solar panels
- generator
- specialised electrical/plumbing
- quad bike to get around the property
- living off the grid requires a 4-wheel drive as to afford a big enough property it has to be in a rural area with dirt roads
- stock animals, chickens and proper facilities to house these stock
- plots for growing crops/fruits/vegetables
- irrigation setup
- harvesting equipment
- fencing to protect your investment
- pest control
- chainsaws and cutting equipment
- sheds for housing equipment and equipment for DIY

I know a kid I went to school with whose father was a plastic surgeon. After he failed school his father bought him a farm off the grid and spent millions setting up the infrastructure.
