It was thought that circumcision was the "proper thing" for "medical reasons" in the "western world" back about 50 or so years ago. It was thought that circumcision prevented penile cancer.

In the region of the planet where i currently live, the tails and ears of dogs are legally better protected by law than the penis of a newborn boy.

Not in the European part of the "western world", AFAIK.

Yes. In the US it became the norm to have it done to all male newborns in the mid 20th century- Gentile/Jew made no difference. But apparently that medical "wisdom" wasnt the thing in Europe at that time, where it remained just a niche religious rite of Jews and Muslims, and not the majority default thing to do.

I stand corrected. It was only done to about 20-25% of babies in the UK in the 1960s. Even less in other European countries.

It was done to about 90% of babies in the early 1960s in the US.

As far as I am aware its not a very common thing to be done to babies here in the UK. I hear its pretty common in America for non religious reasons though, just because parents want their kids wang to look like that. is that real?!

It was done because, supposedly, circumcision prevented penile cancer. It was also supposed to prevent other sorts of infections around the penis.

It had nothing to do with Jewishness.

Female circumcision is generally worse for women than male circumcision is for males.

I’m not an advocate for circumcision.

It simply indicates the need for greater social evolution.

You would be in a pickle if you had a baby son, however, wouldn't you.
I assume that isn't in the cards, at your age.

It's important for me to add to my Original Topic, that I am not against people voluntarily choosing to be circumcised. It's their choice.

But when you make a choice for others, it has to be purely for medical reasons. Religion must never be used to mutilate or subjugate other people. What you choose to do with your own body is your decision alone.

But don't force other people to do the same.

Total agreement. 8)

That abomination on dog mutilation has been banned here in Australia also.
Yet circumcision isn't.

That cancer has more to do with a virus/disease rather than the foreskin.
Protection of careful hygiene post-coitus is all that is required, from what I understand. 8)

I have heard it said that the cost-benefit given to the doctor providing the service was a significant factor.

Do you mean "All things are free in America if you have money to pay for them"?
