Over one hundred City of Portland employees and 73 Multnomah County employees will be fired if they fail to get vaccinated against COVID-19—or receive an exemption—by Monday, the day that both governments' staff vaccine mandates goes into effect.

They had a choice, but chose poorly. My university employer had the same demand. Everyone complied so no one got the axe that I know of. In some ways, I was hoping a few select individuals that I work with were going to pick the other option. Darn my luck.

I feel like someone is stupid if they lose a civil service position over something like vaccines.

This is a public health issue, not a political issue.

it's not fascistic to demand that people take a vaccine that will help stifle the Pandemic once and for all.

People in the Reddit thread where this was posted were excited about new job openings.

Unless they've taken a civil service test, they won't get as much rights as those who were fired because of refusing the vaccine. The City of Portland is probably glad of the opportunity to get rid of some long-term civil servants with a vast amount of rights.

It is not just Portland. This is happening all over the country.

What I do not get is except for a few outliers since 9/11 people have accepted if not embraced all sorts of government intrusions from pat downs to get on airplanes and attend events, to having most our moves recorded on cameras, to loss of privacy online. But this is the issue people are choosing not to virtual signal but to lose livehoods to take a stand.

If the government caves the public loses because of COVID, if the government stands firm the public loses because of staffing shortages.

I wonder if mandatory vaccines are contributing to the staffing shortages? I guess people are willing to be homeless.

Washington college football coach Nick Rolovich -- with a salary of $3.1 million per year -- is fired for not getting COVID vaccine.

It really sucks that my fake sympathy cannot appear genuine right now, as I really need more time to conceal my laughter behind a few crocodile tears.

I find it ironic that people are so obsessed about their freedom that they are actually losing their freedom.

He did not lose his freedom, he used his freedom of choice to chose losing his job and maybe his career over taking the vaccine.

I would prefer employers not turn this into a mandate, but once it’s done they have to follow through.

Having a job does give you freedom, money is freedom when you are not poor.
