We get on well but whenever we are around each other for longer periods of time like road trips he gets angry at the mistakes I make. How do I say I dont want to flat with him?

Should I try soften the blow or just come out and say I don't want to flat with him?

I assume that by "flat with him," you mean "share an apartment with him"?

I would suggest that you tell him that you value his friendship, but you are afraid that if the two of you live together, you will get into endless quarrels and thereby lose your friendship.

You can point out how the two of you get on each other's nerves even when traveling together, and you fear that living together would be even worse than that.
