Haven't watched it for decades, but the only actors I recall playing the Doctor are Patrick Troughton (late 1960s), Jon Pertwee (early 1970s) and Tom Baker (mid-to-late 1970s). Pertwee was probably the best of them, and the fact that he had a daft name was a bonus.

Barely remember Troughton, I think all his episodes were in black and white back then. Baker was annoying - he never seemed to be taking things seriously and that tended to undermine the credibility of the stories (if they had any credibility to start with).

I quite liked Katy Manning, who was Pertwee's assistant.

Peter Capaldi. Equally kind and grumpy.

I never watched the old ones. My daughters favourite Dr is Tom Baker.

Marginally off-topic, but my favourite character from the Pertwee era was 'The Master', played by Roger Delgado, who unfortunately was killed in a car accident in Turkey in 1973.

That's Katy Manning at 5:35 and Jon Pertwee at 6:04, by the way.

I love John Simm as The Master in the recent ones.

My favorite Doctor is David Tennant and my favorite companion is also Clara.

I've only seen the revival and I haven't had a way to watch the current Doctor.

I love Peter Capaldi! I have Scottish roots, so the 12th doctor stood out to me for being Scottish! Not being English! His run was brilliant!

This is my "cop out" answer. I like all of the Doctors from William Hartnell to Jodie Whitaker. I use to be more opinionated. Like I didn't like Peter Davidson because I'd only know Tom Baker, and Peter Davidson was Tristan from All Creatures Great and Small. Then I had to adjust to Colin Baker. Eventually I learned to embrace what every actor brought to the role. It always takes a while, but I know eventually I will find a Doctor I'll enjoy. I think sometimes the producers have to find that Doctor too.

But it isn't just who is playing the Doctor, it is also the producer. John Nathan-Turner was undoubtedly a fan of the show, but he is my least favorite producer.

If you're not familiar with her, look up Delia Derbyshire on YouTube. Ron Granger wrote the Doctor Who theme, but she created it. The Delian Mode She is not unknown to The Wrong Planet. I've found four other posts that mention her.

Appended:
Here is another YouTube recording.
Delia Derbyshire - Sculptress of Sound
I've sync'd it up to the point where they start talking about the Doctor Who theme, since I imagine people may at first be most interested in that.

And I'm sorry if this is an unwanted tangent.

I find it impossible to pick just one Doctor. I am grateful to them all: William Hartnell  Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, John Hurt, Christopher Eccleston

The 4th Doctor (Tom Baker) was my favorite, with Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen) as my most favorite companion, and Nyssa (Sarah Sutton) running a close second.

Christopher Eccleston is my favorite Doctor. I did love John Simm as the Master, but I think Michelle Gomez as Missy is my favorite there.
