This "atmosphere river" is moving further east. To the prairie midwest.

So it may...drown a theater near you...if you live in the northeast of the US, in eastern Canada! :D

There was nearly no evidence of flood water on my short commute home last night - all drained away somewhere.

Buuuut, other places are pretty much Atlantis rn. :/

150 people worked through the night to build a sandbag dam to protect the pump house from water surging across the border from Washington State. So far so good - they haven't lost the pump house and it's still pumping 2.3 Million Litres per minute. IF water rises and that sandbag dam bursts.. turn the clocks back 101 years, Sumas Lake will fill up again. (Probably better for nature.. but not good for the farmers that live and work there.)

My work is organizing an emergency physical goods donation drive cars & coffee parking lot meet for Sunday morning to get as many car clubs and enthusiasts from this side of the devastation to come drop off clothing, food, bottled water etc to see if we can fill our 24' race car trailer & then go deliver it to some local drop off point at a Church or Red Cross or w/e where they're accepting emergency supplies as grocery stores/Costco etc inside the flood zone are pretty much ransacked w/ nothing on the shelves with no idea when they can be re-supplied. I'm about to go take the work truck to a local Costco to drop a grand or so on blankets & clothing etc to kick things off with a corporate contribution. Feel good stuff for sure. 8)

Early on I figured this might be a $ Billion storm - in part because real estate values here are astronomical.. so every crappy house that got destroyed costs $1M+ each. But the damage to highways and railways may far exceed that of homes - it's pretty catastrophic. Plane loads of Canadian Armed Forces members have been flying out of Halifax to come assess the situation and take the lead on managing construction of temporary bridges etc.

Also, a couple of headlines have now stated this may be the costliest natural disaster in all of Canadian history. Believable.. mother nature just wiped out large swaths of some of the most desirable (priciest) real estate on the planet + washed out entire mountainsides taking highways with them. I'll be quite surprised if the Coquihalla reopens in 2022.

*just read an article on my phone about Army engineers building dykes in Abbotsford that will flood a dozen homes to save many more* and in that article the Mayor's realistic estimate is that repairs to dykes + flood damage restoration to the City of Abbotsford alone will be in excess of $1 Billion. 8O That's just one hard hit city. Soooo, the total damage is going to be in the multiple Billions and could top $10 Billion.

..I guess we know what all the Alberta oil workers and nomadic oil/gas workers from Newfoundland are going to be working on for the next year or 2. Everyone's getting a crash course in civil engineering & natural disaster recovery.

So far the only real impact on me here is fuel rationing restrictions implemented today. Everyone is being asked to buy a maximum of 30L of gas at a time so stations don’t run out before they can be resupplied next week. Some people are being total idiots about this and filling up big trucks etc. Other morons are panic buying out groceries and making it so poor paycheque to paycheque people (of which there are a LOT here) don’t have anything left on the shelves to buy for their weekly shop. Morons!

Hopefully these people get embarrassed by news coverage of their behaviour and it discourages others from following suit.

It’s really not that hard to not be a hoarder during a difficult time. Only buy what you Need and carry on. Conserve what you have to make it last a while. Etc. Pretty simple stuff.

And yet in the midst of this the RCMP are busy harassing the Wet'suwet'en for resisting unwanted trespassing by the oil and gas industry on their lands.

Up to 500 volunteers worked to fill 150,000 sandbags in Abbotsford over a 2 day/night period and then worked with the Canadian Armed Forces to coordinate getting them to where they needed to build dykes. So far so good.. buuuut, there's another "parade of storms," starting ~meow that's going to make already flooded areas worse - so it's still possible that there's even worse damage done to cities like Abbotsford over the days ahead.

The Nooksack River breached its banks in Washington state less than an hour ago and all of the overflow is headed North to Abbotsford - where it’s continued to rain.. add in snow melt and water levels have risen 3” already today but are about to rise a fair bit more through the night w/ the strongest of the remaining rains slated for Tuesday.

My best guess is they lose another ~100 homes. But if the pump fails, possibly a lot more.

This whole mess is going to take a couple years to clean up and and improve highways and dyke systems etc at a cost of probably $10B+. I’d also bet money that we can’t get enough skilled and unskilled labour from across Canada fast enough and the end result is that anyone wanting to come to Canada and earn their stay by working to fix highways, bridges, railways, tunnels, dykes, and homes will get a big ol’ expedited rubber stamp on their work visa application.

This thread is kinda reminding me of the news coverage from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina hit. Some thugs were breaking into stores & homes to steal valuables that would do em NO good during a flood like TVs. The police were forced to stop search & rescue duty to try stop the looting because arresting & shooting thugs is more important than saving people's lives  I really hope Canada is not that f#cking heartless

Total opposite. I haven't heard of one single instance of looting in any of the flood zones - only people helping people.

People with boats & free time are volunteering to shuttle people across flooded highways.

Pilots with planes & free time are volunteering to shuttle evacuees.

The Sikh Temple nearest to my home prepared thousands of vegetarian meals and then had volunteers with helicopters deliver meals to people stranded on a highway awaiting rescue.

A military helicopter that's helping with medical flights in the interior of BC had to make an emergency landing - but the only place they could land was a bit sketchy.. locals raced to the scene to find out what was going on and recommended a nearby clearing. The pilot said it would be more solid higher ground, but was risky since it wasn't quite big enough.. so the locals grabbed their chainsaws and fell trees to make way, then housed and fed the soldiers overnight.

My own workplace did a clothing, toiletries, towels, blankets food & bottled water donation drive and filled the floor of a 24' race car trailer to tow out to an official donation point to be distributed to flood affected people. Rather than just donate the space/marketing truck & trailer, my friend agreed to give me a budget to spend at Costco - so we contributed $1200 worth of clothes/blankets/food/diapers/toiletries etc. We remain a drop off point for local car clubs/shops that are doing any sort of collections and want to get them out into the valley.

I've seen many accounts of people offering warm dry shelter - spare bedrooms, campers/trailers/rv's etc.

Anyone with spare pumps and hoses is making sure they're put to good use bailing peoples' basements out.

People with lifted trucks and huge tires have volunteered to do rescues and shuttle evacuees.

500 volunteers worked through the night to fill 150,000 sandbags to assist the military in building a dike to save homes that weren't even theirs. Tons of others continue to fill sandbags.

Others have been preparing and delivering food to volunteers 24/7. Restaurants have offered free meals to evacuees, volunteers, emergency services and military - especially to those who've just lost everything in their underwater home and can't afford to pay.

Cows and livestock that survived are being wrangled and rescued by people on jetskis.

AFAIK there's no looting anywhere, only people helping people.

Sure is! :D

This is the kind of collectivist socialist mentality that our system of government and society encourages and fosters vs America’s every man for himself in life/business/healthcare & even natural disasters sort of mentality.

Sure, we’re still a democracy and capitalists with plenty of rich people and wealth divide, BUT, in general people are good to each other when it counts.

Personally, I think it’s better and that America could learn a lot by paying attention to these ways - but chances are you won’t see any of these things I’ve mentioned on American news coverage because the powers that be wouldn’t want Americans getting any funny ideas about cooperating with each other when divisiveness is so profitable.
