When I was in college back in 2006-2008 I remember there was this one guy with aspergers who was rejected from every social group (including the group I was with).

Forgive me for stating the obvious but do you think that's a common experience for young people with high functioning autism,?

You weren’t rejected….so that might not be as common as you think.

My point is that having Aspergers does not preclude one from having social success.

The subject line of this thread is ambiguous, and therefore misleading.

I agree with Fnord as autism has nothing to do with being rejected from social groups. Though I don't know him, maybe he was doing things that other found to be inappropriate. He also could have been doing or saying things that went against rules of each group rules.

↑ This.

It is one's attitude and behavior that drive people away.  Nobody will even suspect autism until someone starts "acting autistic"; and even then, autism may not even be the first thing they suspect.

Most likely, the first (and only) thing suspected of an autistic man is that he is just being a jerk.

I got rejected from every social group in college, but not high school. But now I live and work in an upper middle class lifestyle. So who cares about that now :)

your question it's valid, but when you neglect the situation like, to not ask how this guy is, if it's everything alright, etc... at least for me it's kind of sadistict y'know, but I'll tell that yes, unfortunately autism disturbs to make up social interactions, that is the most dificulty that autistic people suffer along in their lifes and it's better accepting it rather than negating it, it's reality, neurotypicals often segregate those whom they find strange or different.

Some people are rejected just because they're different. It's got nothing to do with being on the spectrum.

What are social groups?

Like groups of friends, or clubs?

I wasn't involved in either one in Uni including grad school.

I wasn't rejected because I wasn't interested in the first place.

Problem solved.

Oh, but then there was the matter of my housemate putting all my clothes and food outside on the lawn to indicate I should move out.

That may have been a social rejection, but I took it to mean she was a b***h.
